International Homebirth Day, celebrated annually on June 6, raises awareness about an individual’s right to choose their baby’s birthplace and honours the midwives who make out-of-hospital deliveries safe and personalized. For healthy, low-risk pregnancies, it emphasizes a calm, physiologic birth experience.

Think your water might have broken? Here’s a simple way to use the TACO acronym in that moment:
Time — When did it start?
Amount - How much did you notice, Is it a gush or a slow trickle? Are you standing in a puddle of water?
Colour- Was it clear, brown, green or yellow in colour?
Odour — Does it have a smell to it, is the smell fresh, earthy or foul?
It can help you pause, gather information, and decide next steps. If you suspect your water has released, it is recommended to head into the hospital for examination or contact your midwife.

It has been a while since we introduced ourselves, if you are new to our page, hello and welcome. We’re an established
team of doulas and educators supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and the early days with a new baby and have been honoured to do so since 1998. At the heart of what we do is a simple belief, families deserve to feel heard, respected, and supported in their choices. We’re here to offer evidence-based information, practical tools, and steady, compassionate care so you can move through this experience feeling more prepared and confident.
We believe in meeting people where they are, honouring each unique journey, and creating space for informed decision-making without pressure or judgment.

Research continues to show that gender bias exists in healthcare and it impacts outcomes. Studies have found that women are more likely to have their pain underestimated or dismissed, experience longer wait times in emergency settings, and face delays in diagnosis for conditions like heart disease and autoimmune disorders. Historically, much of medical research has been based on male bodies, which can affect how symptoms are recognized and treated.

We’d love to hear from you, what systematical issues have come up in your healthcare experience? comment below.

Taking time for pre-baby conversations can make a big difference. It gives you and your partner space to get on the same page, talk through expectations, and think about how you want to handle those early days. It doesn’t mean you’ll have everything figured out before baby's arrival, it just means you’ve started the conversation, and that can make things feel a whole lot more grounded when baby arrives. Here are some ideas on topics to discuss below.

Newborns move through different little states throughout the day.
Sometimes they’re deeply asleep, sometimes a bit wiggly in active sleep, sometimes just quietly taking everything in, and other times letting you know they need something. When you start to notice these patterns, it gets a little easier to understand what your baby is asking for and when they’re ready to feed, connect, or just be held and learning their rhythm over time.
