"A huge thank you, Leah.

I know I struggle with speaking English... You’ve helped me gain confidence, to overcome my fear of speaking English a little, and for that, I want to thank you. I’ve taken a few English courses before, but none have helped me regain confidence like you have." - Guillaume

What makes phrasal verbs so difficult?

Phrasal verbs are when two verbs said together take on a different meaning than their original meaning.

For example, "speak up" doesn't mean "talk to the ceiling". It means SPEAK LOUDER.

Phrasal verbs are so common in English that native speakers may not even recognize their meaning is unclear.

On top of that, some phrasal verbs can have multiple meanings.

The best way to learn is through conversation, asking questions, and taking note of these funny sayings to study later.

What phrasal verbs were difficult for you?

Why do some people prefer 1-on-1 classes, while others prefer group classes?

Well, private 1-on-1 classes allow customized learning plans that move at your own pace. You have more time to talk with the teacher and ask questions and get more teacher feedback. Some people find more value in this because of the customized nature of the class. They may also find this format less intimidating as they feel uncomfortable speaking in a group setting.

While this can all be true, group classes have advantages too.

Group classes are typically cheaper, and depending on class sizes, can still be quite customized. In small groups you can learn from other students and benefit from the questions they have. It is also more social, as you have an authentic communication challenge to understand and speak to a variety of people. Group classes can also be more dynamic due to a variety of possibilities of activities for groups and partners. While you may not receive as much personal feedback, teachers still correct and pay attention to error trends in the whole group for the benefit of everyone.

My favourite way to learn AND teach is in group settings. But I am curious...what do you prefer?

Trying to become fluent in a new language is challenging. Believe me, I am currently struggling to learn Spanish. Modern Apps like Duolingo are very popular because they make language learning into a game.

But this doesn't work!

Why? Because people need to interact in meaningful ways. Think of when you go to a grocery store and you don't know how to ask for a bag. You google it before you get to the register, and then use it in a real interaction. That language stays in your memory way longer than when you use it in a game.

In my classes, I create a real need for communication in English, creating REAL scenarios and tasks that help you learn and REMEMBER language. This is called task-based language learning and is one of the most effective ways to learn a language. If you want to see for yourself, join my drop in conversation class this Wednesday to see REAL communication in action!

Death to DUO!
