Our values show up in the small, everyday moments of care.
"Using correct pronouns shows our intention to live our values and shows respect for people as unique individuals." - Marlene Varga (she/her), skin integrity practice lead.
Marlene reminds us that something as simple as asking how someone would like to be addressed is respect in action.
It's compassion in action.
It's how we honour the sacredness of every person we care for.
To anyone who walks through the doors of our sites across Alberta: you are seen, you are welcome and you belong here. ๐

Behind every great hospital is a community that cares!
The Bonnyville Health Centre Community Board, led by Audrey Campbell, gives their time to advocate for local health care and bring patient voices to the table. We appreciate MLA Scott Cyr for meeting with them to discuss continuing care, long-term care, diagnostics and the needs of our growing region.
Thank you to everyone working to strengthen care close to home! ๐

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet with the Covenant Bonnyville Community Board at the Bonnyville Health Centre. Made up of dedicated local volunteers, the Board serves as an important link between Covenant Health, healthcare providers, patients, families, and the broader community by gathering feedback, advocating for local healthcare priorities, and helping ensure local voices are reflected in conversations about healthcare services and planning.
What makes the Board unique is that its work extends well beyond the boardroom. Members can often be found engaging with residents at community events, reading stories to children at the library, visiting with patients in the hospital, or supporting initiatives that promote health and wellness throughout the community. Their commitment to serving others is evident throughout Bonnyville and the surrounding area, and after spending time with them yesterday, it's easy to see why they have earned such strong community respect.
Our discussion focused on several healthcare priorities identified through community engagement, including continuing care capacity, long-term care needs, diagnostic services, emergency department pressures, and the future healthcare needs of our growing region. Hearing directly from community leaders and volunteers provides valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing healthcare in northeastern Alberta. Conversations like these help inform ongoing advocacy efforts as we work to strengthen healthcare services and capacity for a growing region.
Audrey Campbell and the members of the Bonnyville Health Centre Community Board deserve recognition for their commitment to our community. Through their advocacy, outreach, and volunteer efforts, they help build stronger connections between healthcare providers, community organizations, patients, and families. Their dedication to supporting both residents and healthcare workers helps ensure local voices continue to be heard as our healthcare system evolves and grows.
I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to our Site Administrator Shelly Franklin, Covenant Health, our physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff for the care they provide every day. Whether caring for a patient in the emergency department, welcoming a new baby into the world, supporting a family through a difficult time, or helping someone recover and return home, their work touches countless lives across our region. Their dedication, compassion, and professionalism help ensure residents have access to quality healthcare services close to home.
Strong communities are built by people who step forward to serve others, and the Bonnyville Health Centre Community Board is a great example of that commitment in action. Thank you for helping make Bonnyville and the surrounding area a healthier and stronger place to call home.

Learning through connection๐ค
As part of Indigenous Health Education Day last week, participants joined Lyndon Suntjens for an interactive session focused on Indigenous perspectives of connection, culture and community.
Through land-based learning and traditional games, attendees experienced firsthand the importance of relationship-building and learning through shared experiences.
A nehiyaw educator from Goodfish Lake First Nation, Lyndon brought his passion for culture, education and youth mentorship to the session.
Throughout National Indigenous History Month, we're reflecting on the knowledge and experiences shared during Indigenous Health Education Day.๐งก

Last week, Chief Bruneau and Council of Papaschase First Nation visited the Covenant Community Health Centre.
Several of our sites including the community health centre sit on lands that formed part of the original Papaschase reserve.
Acknowledging that in person, together, mattered.
The visit opened with a smudge ceremony in the multi-faith room. A space built to welcome spiritual, cultural and ceremonial practices. Then Chief and Council toured the building with Covenant staff.
We're grateful that Chief Bruneau and Council made the trip. The conversation that started last week is one we want to keep going. ๐ค

This week we welcomed CTV and Global News to the Grey Nuns Hospital to shine a light on the music therapy program in the NICU.
For families in the NICU, every day holds uncertainty. Music therapy offers a chance to connect, soothe and be present with their baby.
We are grateful to the media for helping share these stories, and to the families who opened their hearts so others can understand the difference compassionate care makes.
Although the music therapy program has now ended, the site is hoping to keep it going with additional funding from donations made through the Covenant Foundation.

A day of learning, connection and celebration.
This week, staff, volunteers and community members came together for an Indigenous Health Education Day at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital.
Through storytelling, music, dance, land-based learning and cultural teachings, participants had the opportunity to learn from First Nations, Mรฉtis and Inuit knowledge keepers, artists and educators.
From hoop dancing and fiddle music to throat singing and Indigenous games, the day created space for meaningful conversations, reflection and shared learning.
Throughout National Indigenous History Month, we'll be sharing highlights from the day's sessions and the individuals who generously shared their knowledge, stories and experiences.
Thank you to all of the presenters, organizers and participants who helped make the day such a meaningful experience.๐งก
