Off-Highway Vehicle safety program offered for free to Alberta schools. Always carry valid insurance and registration for you OHV. Be safe and have fun!
The Alberta Snowmobile Association’s main program mission statement is 'Ride with Respect'. Our activities drive home the message to ride with respect for yourself, your machine, for others and for the land. These machines are powerful and give us the freedom to access places and activities that we might not normally get to experience, but we need to acknowledge that with that great power comes gr
eat responsibility. We show how careless and inexperienced use of off-road vehicles can increase the chance of disrupting families communities and eco-systems. We want the students to enjoy the colorful and interactive program and hope that the youth taking part will make the connection that respectful riding is the best way to ensure many more years of off-highway vehicle fun. Rules to keep you safe and to protect the environment around you:
• Wear a properly fitted helmet approved for motorized use.
• Wear proper clothing and safety gear.
• Bring emergency supplies and First Aid kit and know how to use them.
• Buckle up when riding on a Side by Side.
• Younger riders want to make sure they have appropriate adult supervision.
• Make sure the machine is the right size for the rider.
• Use proper hand signals and riding positions.
• Take avalanche safety courses to prevent accidents in the mountains.
• Choose safe and environmentally responsible places to cross moving water. Use bridges whenever possible.
• Stick to authorized trails and areas where off-roading is permitted.
• Don’t be a litter bug!
• Avoid spooking livestock and wildlife you encounter and keep your distance.
• Avoid slushy ice, ice on or near moving water, ice that has thawed and refrozen, layered or “rotten” ice. Should be at least 12CM thick!
• When night riding make sure that your lights work properly, stay in familiar areas, stay on established trails, carry flares/flashlights, never ride alone, pull off trail if you stop and always let someone know where you are going. When riding in public areas obey the Off-Highway Vehicle Act and the bylaws local to your area.
