When COVID hit in early 2020, my business was still relatively new. I was hosting Death Cafes and classes in cafes and libraries, and running workshops in seniors’ associations. 
COVID basically shut me down. 
Lucky for me, I have mad skills! The program where my entrepreneurial journey began needed a new facilitator. While the world was learning to navigate virtual classrooms, I drew on some of my other transferable skills to help other new business owners research, design, and implement their own businesses. 
This side quest taught me something I use in my work with executors all the time: knowing something and doing something with that knowledge are two very different things!
As a facilitator, coach, and mentor, I was there to help them figure out what applied to their situation, what they needed to do next, and where they might need some help. 
Education, delegation, and communication: the three pillars of Executor School. 
Because knowing what an executor is doesn't prepare you to actually be one.

I was a licensed funeral services preplanner for a few years. My goal was not to sell funeral preplans, but to understand the funeral industry from the inside. Back in my archaeology days I’d written my thesis on modern mortuary practices. But that was ages ago, and I needed to understand the industry in this millennium! So I figured the best way to understand the industry was to get in there and learn.
I’m so grateful to the funeral directors, funeral homes, cemetery managers, celebrants, and regulators that helped me along the way. The experience gave me a much better understanding of body disposition, memorialization, and grief. 
I’ve carried that valuable perspective into all of my death literacy workshops, and it informed my five years as a Death Cafe facilitator. 
It has allowed me to be a safe space and a knowledge resource for people in need.

When I decided to set up my change management consultancy in 2018, I was planning on continuing with organizational change management. But a funny thing happened on the way to the forum. I met a woman in my business class who was a Certified Executor Advisor.
It brought together so many of my skills and interests: thanatology, project, change, and document management; organizing and simplifying complexity; and designing and facilitating learning.  
So I got certified and completely rewrote my business plan. Then I started doing the work, and started seeing the gap between estate planning and executor preparation. People were preparing their documents. They weren't preparing their people.
And that became the premise for Executor School.
