WEAC is more than a building. It is a place where women can find short-term accommodation, shelter, connection, and support when they need it most.
Located in the Quarters neighbourhood in McCauley, WEAC is part of our work to support women in our community with dignity, compassion, and care.
Every woman who walks through the doors brings her own story, strength, and courage. Our role is to help create a space where she can feel supported, connected, and able to take the next step at her own pace.
Programs like WEAC are an important part of a stronger Edmonton community, one where people can access support, feel seen, and know they do not have to navigate difficult moments alone.

Tax season may still be a little ways off, but it’s always a good time to know what support is available.
Our Make Tax Time Pay program provides free, safe, and confidential tax filing support for eligible low to moderate income Edmontonians, and support is available year-round.
Filing your taxes can also help make sure you’re receiving the government benefits and subsidies you may be eligible for, even if you’re not currently working or did not earn income.
Beyond tax filing, we also offer Financial Empowerment resources, including downloadable Financial Connect workbooks to support ongoing financial learning.

Young Chefs is all about helping students build practical food skills they can use in everyday life.
Through hands-on learning, the program supports food literacy, kitchen confidence, and a better understanding of cooking and preparing food.
As Young Chefs returns, we’re excited to continue creating opportunities for students to learn by doing and build skills that can stay with them long after the program ends.

A few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to be part of the Dragon Festival in Edmonton’s Chinatown. 🐉
It was a wonderful celebration of Chinese culture, community, and the vibrancy of the neighbourhood. We’re grateful to Explore Chinatown Edmonton and Chinatown Transformation Collaborative Society for inviting us to join the event and share more about the work we do.

Today, on International Literacy Day, we’re celebrating the power of reading, learning, and early literacy. 📖💚
Reading is a foundational skill that helps children build confidence, communication skills, curiosity, and a love of learning.
Through our Head Start and Early Learning programs, children have opportunities to strengthen early literacy skills through stories, play, conversation, and everyday learning experiences.
Our programs also support literacy for the whole family through Literacy Groups for parents, helping create more opportunities to learn, connect, and share in the joy of reading together.
Because life really is richer with a good story.
Today is a reminder of how meaningful literacy can be at every age, and how those early experiences can help shape a lifelong relationship with learning.

At The Hallway Café, growth can look like many things.
It can look like a young person building confidence in a busy café setting.
It can look like learning new skills, setting goals, showing up for a shift, or discovering a new sense of possibility.
Through this program, we have seen young people grow, develop their dreams, and begin imagining what comes next. Some have even found a passion for cooking and started exploring a future in the culinary arts.
The Hallway Café provides youth with employment readiness training, education access, navigation supports, and hands-on experience in a live café environment.

Meet Moose, WEAC’s facility dog and one very special member of the team! 🐾
This is an extra special second installment of our People Behind the Programs series, where we’re introducing you to the people, and in this case, the paws, who help make our work possible.
Moose was made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Morris Family Foundation and works alongside his handler, Tracey, a social worker at WEAC. His role may look a little different from the rest of the team, but the impact he has is easy to see.
From offering comfort, connection, and the ability to feel safe to communicate with our team, Moose makes everyone he engages with feel at ease. women at WEAC light up when they see him, and those moments of joy and connection can mean a lot. 💚
