Special Issue on Northern Economic Development in Canada:
Indigenous Economies, Entrepreneurship in Canada’s North

The Journal of Aboriginal Economic Development (JAED), in partnership with the Northern Review, invites submissions for a special issue focused on economic development in Canada’s North, with an emphasis on the experiences, innovations, and leadership of Northern Indigenous communities. The Northern Review, based at Yukon University, is the only academic journal published north of 60 in Canada. It has been published regularly since 1988. It takes an interdisciplinary, north-centered, and circumpolar approach, encouraging contributions from northerners and others with strong interests in the region.

Canada’s North—encompassing Inuit Nunangat, the territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Nunavik), and the northern regions of the provinces—stands at the forefront of profound economic transformation. Resource development, climate change, infrastructure expansion, and geopolitical pressures are reshaping Northern economies. At the same time, Indigenous Nations are advancing self-determined economic visions grounded in land, culture, governance, and innovation.

Description: Charly Gilpin is a Two-Spirit Cree person from Wemindji in Eeyou Istchee, located along the eastern shores of James Bay. She is the Youth Chief in Wemindji, elected by the Youth members to lead the Youth Council for a term of 3 years. Charly shares her journey as a young advocate, and how she answered her call into leadership, governance and community service.
