Rooted but relevant…

Check out this excerpt of my chat with Alberta Teachers Association Fine Arts Council on ensemble choreography and my insights, inspirations, and philosophy around it.

We eat with our eyes first and choreography that is rooted but relevant has such an incredible ability to draw new audiences in and allow them to love musical theatre, even if the material is older.

Everybody cut footloose!

Wishing the cast, crew, and creatives of Footloose at Mayfield a very happy opening. Despite some challenges along the way, this process has been filled with so much joy and, personally, a little bit of much needed healing.

Thank you, Kate Ryan, for bringing me back on board to give legs to this wonderful show, and for also trusting me with my first assistant director position. Grateful for you.

“There is a time to every purpose under heaven – a time to laugh and a time to weep. There is a time to mourn and there is a time to dance.”

WORLD THEATRE DAY (read caption 👇🏼)

I wanted to share this tech rehearsal video of “It’s All Happening” from the Canadian premiere of Bring It On that I was fortunate enough to have choreographed last year at Globe Theatre in Regina.

This song embodies what we do as theatre artists… imagining possibilities and helping the audience see those possibilities in themselves.

This cast was such a gift and I still think on this show fondly.

What an adventure.

I normally do contemporary and pop musicals so it was very exciting to finally choreograph not only a classic, but one that is set in a world that is so fantastical and bizarre. A chance to honour a well-loved and timeless story while giving it some fun new twists.

To my fellow wizards…
Thom Allison, thank you for bringing me along and for believing in what I could do to bring this world to life. Steven Greenfield, thank you for the beautiful music, your incredible collaboration, and for being the lore expert of the land of Oz.

To my choreo team…
Sarah Dowling, thank you for being my rock! Your keen eye, generous spirit, and dramaturgical brain were absolutely invaluable to this process. Jesse Drwiega, thank you for being such a fantastic dance captain and liaison for the cast. This show is in excellent hands.

To the cast and crew…
Thank you for your teamwork and for showering this show with so much love. Y’all make the story fly (literally and figuratively).

Thank you Citadel Theatre for this opportunity.

We made it over the rainbow 🌈
