Great Grey Owls often hunt from fence lines and other low perches. These impressive owls are always an exciting find and a favourite subject of mine to photograph.

Well, what a lot of work! I’ve spent an incredible amount of time going through images for my 2027 calendar. I’ve learned that just because it’s a good image doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a calendar image. It needs to have that little extra “wow” factor.
I finally have a rough draft completed! Tomorrow I’ll proofread everything one more time and then send it off for a test print.

I decided to make this image black and white. Just gives the image a different feel when you remove the colour.

I came across this Brown Pelican while photographing along the coast of Mazatlán. They are such interesting birds to watch, especially when fishing. One minute they're gliding effortlessly above the water and the next they're diving straight into the ocean after a fish. Their large throat pouch acts like a net, scooping up both fish and water before they drain the water and swallow their catch.

Imagine my surprise when I spotted a Snowy Egret on the beach in Mazatlán! It was wonderful watching this guy fishing along the shoreline. Snowy Egrets are easily recognized by their white plumage, slender black bills, black legs and bright yellow feet. They feed in shallow coastal waters, hunting small fish, crustaceans and other aquatic prey.

This image was taken in BC in Nov 2025 -Sandhill Crane. Sandhill cranes are large grey birds recognized by their red crowns and distinctive calls. They live and breed in wetlands and open areas and migrate long distances each year. They usually mate for life and are known for courtship displays that include jumping, bowing and wing movements.

This lovely bird is called Anna's Hummingbird.

Anna’s hummingbirds may be tiny, but they have plenty of personality. The males are especially eye-catching, with brilliant pink feathers on their head and throat that can look almost black in one moment and suddenly flash bright magenta when they catch the light. They’re curious, feisty little birds and will often perch nearby, keeping a close watch on everything going on around them.

This image was taken in 2024, when we were fortunate enough to come across this little Boreal Owl.

Boreal owls are one of those owls you can search for again and again and still rarely see. Small, quiet and incredibly well hidden, they spend their days tucked into the boreal forest and become active mostly after dark. They hunt primarily voles and mice, often listening from a perch before dropping onto prey. Finding one during the day takes patience and a fair bit of luck—which makes finally spotting one pretty special.

This image was taken at Frank Lake, Alberta last May. Up until a couple of years ago I had never see an America Avocet.

American avocets are striking shorebirds, easily recognized by their long, slender, upturned bills and bold black-and-white wings. During breeding season, their head and neck take on a beautiful warm cinnamon colour. They often forage in shallow wetlands by sweeping their bills from side to side through the water, searching for small aquatic insects and other tiny prey. Graceful both on the ground and in flight, they are one of the most distinctive birds found around prairie ponds, marshes and shallow lakes.
