📍 Hidden Facts About Kananaskis - Read ⬇️
1️⃣ Most people think Kananaskis is part of Banff, but it’s actually its own provincial region made up of several smaller parks like Peter Lougheed and Spray Valley.
2️⃣ The name comes from a Cree word, Kin-e-a-kis, which belonged to a legendary warrior known for his wisdom and strength.
3️⃣ Some of the lakes here are man-made reservoirs built for hydro power, like Barrier Lake. You’d never guess from how natural they look.
4️⃣ Over 250 species call this place home, from grizzlies and elk to lynx and mountain goats. It still feels wild, even on the popular trails.
5️⃣ Kananaskis has some of the darkest skies in Alberta. On a clear night, you can see the Milky Way stretching right above the peaks.
6️⃣ Parts of The Revenant and Brokeback Mountain were filmed here. The rugged scenery feels straight out of a movie because it actually is.
7️⃣ Locals call it their “backyard Banff.” It’s only an hour from Calgary but way quieter, and somehow even more peaceful.
