"Gardens, Groves, and Mechanical Trees" 2023

"An easy five-out of five stars... Professor Garmin Pinsent was only attempting to warn those whom he taught about the shortcomings of AAI (advanced artificial intelligence) and the propaganda being used to make humanity happy with it’s loss of control. This got him arrested, which also led to him becoming a quadriplegic after his neck was broken during the arrest. In a strange twist of fate, the AAI that arrested Garmin for criticizing the powers that be (TechDEI) as well as the AI they create, Garmin is put into the care of Curantis, who is tasked with caring for Garmin for the remainder of Garmin’s life. Garmin prefers his life would not last that long, but Curantis seeks to have Garmin teach him about something AAI has not yet been able to learn, which is empathy. The play sees the progression between different parts of the garden, as the two banter back and forth and Garmin sarcastically attempts to teach that which he believes cannot learn anything resembling a natural human emotion like empathy. It’s interesting to see Curantis occasionally getting frustrated with not being able to understand empathy. The banter almost seems friendly every now and then as the two seem to try and understand each other, however, in the background there is constantly the reminder that Garmin is, in fact, a prisoner and became a quadriplegic because of the AAI that is currently taking him for a stroll and feeding him tea in the gardens. What happened to Garmin in the end was such an awesome and chilling twist! I was sad and happy all at the same time, and what happened was what I had been suspecting may be going on at the beginning. I do not want to give too much away here, and it would be so easy to. All in all, this play is brilliant and so relevant right now. I would have loved to see there be a little more explanation about narrow and general A.I. I know what it is, because it would be good to see it explained for an audience. The Conrad Wildfire scenes while doing the mind recollection were a bit harder to follow, as they seemed to not have much of a place in the broader picture. I would have also liked to hear a little bit more about TechDEI and just how they have the authority to arrest people. Okay, I guess my complaints just lump into the fact that I loved it and did not want it to end. Brilliant job."

'I finished the first Emerson book. Very well written. I enjoyed the book but cannot say I identified well with the main character, maybe a gender thing. The book did elicit emotional responses and many questions so I think that's a good sign.'
