ESL - English as a Second Language
Hello, and welcome to our English as a Second Language (ESL) page. We are a Christian organization.
Our goals are to study the bible and learn the English language in a relaxed and fun environment!
How is everyone's week going? Are you managing to read for 20 minutes each day? Perhaps you were able to hold an English conversation with someone else? Don't forget to check out the library. They have such a wide range of resources and I'm sure you can find something that will interest you!

Tonight, our bible story will be focusing on the first great biblical leader and patriarch, Abraham. If you would like to have an overall understanding of the story of Abram, I encourage you to read the stories in Genesis, chapters 12 – 22. We will be focus on small sections within these chapters. Namely, Abram is called by God to leave his home, and the promise and birth of his son, Isaac. (My teacher likes to say, by Dennis Brennan-Nelsen, 2004)
“Do you have ants in your pants?”
my teacher like to say.
I’m not sure what she means,
But I like it anyway.
When I have ants in my pants
I squirm and wiggle and shout!
I jump up and down and twist around
‘til the ants in my pants fall out!
This idiom “ants in your pants” is a modern expression used to usually describe a wiggly child who is unable to sit still. In the seventeenth century, people would say, “Is there a gadfly in one’s breeches?”
Coming Monday night, we will be reading through some written texts with fascinating illustrations, depicting various idioms.
There will be ESL tonight. Enjoy your family day!

Class was in full swing last night as we attempted to name and explain the meaning of idiom phrases. This is not always easy when you come from a different country! Idioms sound foreign! Once heard and the meaning learned, it will then take practice to use them in everyday speech.
Thanks to one of our students who brought some handmade chocolates for us to enjoy while we worked!
