Yesterday, we gathered in northeast Edmonton for a Pipe Ceremony, Project Announcement, and Land Blessing to mark an important milestone for Mikisew Commons. 🏡

Led by Mikisew Group in partnership with Paragon Living, Mikisew Commons is one of the largest Indigenous-led housing developments in Canadian history. The project represents a long-term investment in people, community, accessibility, and opportunity.

When complete, Mikisew Commons will deliver:
• 438 new residential units
• 180 non-market affordable units
• 11% fully barrier-free units
• Energy-efficient design that exceeds the 2020 National Energy Code for Buildings requirements 🌿

The day began with a Pipe Ceremony led by Elder Ken Saddleback and continued with a Project Announcement and Land Blessing attended by Mikisew community members, Elders, Chiefs and Councils from across Treaty 6, partners, clients, and guests.

We extend our gratitude to everyone who joined us and helped honour this important moment. 🤝

Construction is expected to begin this fall, with the first residents anticipated to move into the community in spring 2029.

Built by community, for community.

Yesterday, Mikisew Group was proud to host a Pipe Ceremony and Project Announcement for Mikisew Commons—one of the largest Indigenous-led affordable housing developments in Canadian history.

The day began with a Pipe Ceremony led by Elder Ken Saddleback, joined by Councillor Tammie Tuccaro of Mikisew Cree First Nation, along with Chiefs and Councils from across Treaty 6, including Chief Calvin Bruneau and Council from Papaschase First Nation and Councillor Blair Morin from Enoch Cree Nation.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to members of our Elder Senate—Elder Lillian Waquan, Elder Marlene Lepine Hall, Elder Darlene Voyageur, and Elder Matthew Lepine—who travelled from Fort Chipewyan to be with us. Your presence honoured the day and grounded this important milestone in culture, community, and tradition.

At 3:00 p.m., we welcomed community members, partners, clients, and guests for the Project Announcement and Land Blessing. Upon completion, Mikisew Commons will deliver 438 residential units in northeast Edmonton, including 180 non-market affordable homes with rents averaging 56% below market rates, supported by a 40-year affordability commitment and fully barrier-free design.
Construction is expected to begin this fall, with the first residents anticipated to move in during 2029.

Mikisew Commons reflects our long-term commitment to our members and to the Indigenous communities across the Edmonton region that so many of our people call home. It is a project rooted in partnership, economic reconciliation, and creating lasting housing opportunities for generations to come.

We are grateful to our partners at Paragon Living for their collaboration and shared commitment to bringing this vision forward.

We look forward to sharing additional details, including funding announcements and project updates, in the months ahead.

Mikisew ConeTec recently completed a cutline restoration project for Mikisew Cree First Nation.

The project took place from February 2 to February 14 and focused on cutline restoration to help preserve caribou herds.

The work was completed using a conventional excavator in collaboration with MCFN and Swamp Donkey.

Great work Mikisew ConeTec!
