Happy Black History Month!

This year's theme is Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build”. A celebration of the rich past and present contributions and accomplishments of Black people in Canada, while aspiring to embrace new opportunities for the future.

Black History is something to be celebrated year round. As we focus in during this month, it is an opportunity to learn, grow, and embrace the change that doing both can bring.

As usual, AFRO FACTS will be out and about in the community educating, sharing, and supporting. What will you be doing to celebrate?

On this MLK day, I look to the legend himself for inspiration and strength to continue to move forward.

Here Martin Luther King Jr. Is pictured with his wife Coretta Scott King at the Harlem hospital after he was stabbed during a book signing in 1958. In spite of what happened, he continued to move forward, knowing that the greater good for which he worked was worth it.

I look to him to find a similar strength after having experienced the greatest example of discrimination in my own life recently. We often do not talk about the lasting effects of such discrimination and how it can make a person fearful of showing up as their full self in today's world. How it can create anxiety and distrust for the systems that we have been told are there to serve and protect us.

The struggle is real and layered. As I crawl me way back into the light (because that is what it truly feels like, a slow crawl) sharing my experiences, my story, I am reminded of that fact that MLK faced much worse and that I'm have the ability to do what I do in the DEI space becuase of what he endured.

So move forward, I shall, using my voice to bring awareness to the existence of the problems that continue to plague minority group members, doing what I can to support the changes that I would like to see.

It Official!

I am so excited to be MC of this year’s Inventures conference in Calgary May 31 to June 2.

As THE startup and innovation event in Western Canada, Inventures is a one-of-a-kind experience where investors, entrepreneurs, startups, and thought leaders gather to connect and foster new collaborations. It is the place to explore transformational technologies, assess emerging talent, and discover bold solutions to urgent local and global challenges.

This year’s theme is See Different which could not be any more appropriate.

Inventures is about facilitating the connections needed between ideation, collaboration, and fruition in order to do just that, create a world in which we are doing things differently because we see the world differently.

As an entrepreneur who’s own affirmation is to change the world, I could not be more excited to be part of such an incredible event.

ICYMI.....

We are so happy to be one of the sponsors for tomorrow's Black History Month event being put on by the for their ANZA program. I get the chance to work with this amazing group of youth and supporters as one of the program facilitators.

The event is free, so come check it out and support the community, Black entrepreneurship, the incredible youth, and they their businesses.

ACCEC in partnership with the University of Calgary Faculty of Social Work, Anti-Racism Taskforce, sincerely invites you to an experience of African Indigenous digital storytelling, youthful entrepreneurs showcasing their businesses, as well as an evening of live performances and dinner.

The event is being held in commemoration of Black History Month whilst at the same time creating a platform for youth who are involved in the ANZA Entrepreneurship Program to showcase their business achievements thus far.  In addition to creating awareness of issues bedeviling people of African descent, it intends to expand avenues of business opportunities for our youths.

We also hope to generate an interest towards the upcoming May 2023 Cohort 4 Intake as we continue to create safe economic opportunities for our youth.

Happy Superbowl. This year, will see two Black Quarterbacks starting for the first time in history. In addition to that, Jalen Hurts is also the youngest QB to go to the Superbowl.

Big ups to them both, and may the beat team win.
