Your child's preschool days are filled with social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development. The cognitive skills learned at this stage—like basic counting and vocabulary—may seem simple, but they will set your kid up for a lifetime of knowledge.

At Smiles Academy Preschool here are some of the important learning milestones children will achieve:
-Recognizing letters and sounds.
-Learning colors, basic shapes, and body parts.
-Counting numbers
-Develop fine motor skills by cutting and drawing
-Socializing and Sharing in Preschool
-Developing important social skills is necessary before starting kindergarten; preschoolers will learn how to share and cooperate, work together, take turns, participate in group activities, follow simple directions, and communicate wants and needs.

Stay warm everyone! 😊

Academics plays a huge focus at Smiles Academy:

In preschool math and literacy skills are introduced. Children are taught numbers and letters, but it is taught in a way that is appealing to children at this age. Children sing an alphabet song while following along in a picture book or learn rhymes and chants, which help them to notice the distinct sounds within words.

Stories are read to children to encourage their listening, comprehension, and expressive language skills. Matching games, sorting games and counting games build children’s understanding of numbers, and sequences. Putting puzzles together encourages children to notice patterns and to work on problem-solving skills.

Children learn best through activities they find interesting, such as songs, storytime, and imaginative play. Preschool is not about achieving academic success; it is about creating a well-round child who wants to explore and question their surroundings. Learning new skills helps builds confidence.

Hello Parents!
Welcome to Smiles Academy, a Montessori inspired and kindergarten curriculum preschool! I've taught Kindergarten years prior for Edmonton Public school and now implementing that into my preschool. This center will be a mix of teacher led activities as well as student directed influences.

Alberta Learning Curriculum:
Your child will have one on one and small group time with a licensed teacher daily! At a time when learning the fundamentals is vital, implementing a majority of the kindergarten curriculum and experiencing a teacher led program gives your child a head start and prepares them for what is to come in kindergarten.

Montessori Inspired Preschool:
When the center is not teacher led, the students are transitioned into Montessori inspired experience which utilizes exercises and materials in the classroom that await each child’s “moment of discovery” in various areas. The materials are innately enticing, appealing to the child’s natural interests and instincts, and actively engaging each child in “academic discovery,” learning and work. They provide a progression from hands on learning to abstraction, involve physical movement, are aesthetically designed, isolate one skill problem, and allow for self-correction.

Smiles Academy plans the exercises and materials in the classroom (inspired by Montessori learning) can be divided into four main groups:
1. Practical Life
-This area develops concentration, co-ordination, social skills,
and independence.
2. Sensorial
-categorize and systemize the vast assortment of impressions
they have already received and will continually go on receiving
at the center.
3. Language
-Through the use of hands on materials, the children explore
vocabulary development, the preparation of the hand for
writing, and the introduction of the sounds of the letters of the
alphabet. This leads the child to reading and writing.
4. Mathematics
-Beginning with materials to understand the concepts of 1 to 10,
the child is then able to move into all areas of mathematics
learning about larger numbers, teens, skip counting, and
fractions all in their concrete form.
