It will surprise absolutely no one that we Curios are a bunch of Folkies. Last year we produced a video for volunteer orientation Edmonton Folk Music Festival as well as these stand alone animations that illustrate the perks of being a volunteer (can confirm, the meals are no joke 🤤). Whether you volunteered or not, we hope that you had a happy 2025 Folk Festival!

Mark Connolly first worked for the CBC as a janitor in his teens. He would end up clocking a mind-boggling 37 years in the broadcast booth, both at home (as host of Edmonton AM) and across the globe as a sportscaster, covering the Olympics since 1996. His talents are likewise all over the map: As a host, a newscaster, an emcee, and a moderator for the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, Mark has never met a microphone he didn’t like (or that didn’t like him back).
This week, Mark becomes an emcee and host for hire, broadening his availability to his admirers as well as his wife and sons. His calling card will now bear his own personal brand, a logo developed by Curio Studio that puts his monogrammed stamp on a ribbon microphone, much in the same as he’s left his mark on Edmonton and on broadcast history.
Hats off to Mark for everything he’s done to make this city a funnier, more exciting, more wonderful place to be!

We've been busy birdies at the studio this spring! Did you miss us? Now that the summer months are here, we're ready to share what our flock's been up to. First up, a fun lil' logo for local folk musicians The Night Warblers.

Are you familiar with isometric illustration? Often used in technical illustrations, architectural design, and engineering applications; it is an illustration style that represents three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface, creating the illusion of depth and space.

We created 44 unique isometric illustrations (😱) for the folks at , which the Land Use team can use to easily assemble and adjust visuals for future regulations—making technical documents more accessible to the public.

We partnered with the Saulteau First Nations to design and illustrate this ethnobotanical guidebook, which explores the cultural and medicinal significance of the flora that grows in Treaty 8 Territory. This was an incredibly fulfilling project for all members of our team and we were delighted to work with the Saulteau First Nations and a team of ethnobotanists to bring this book to life.

Over the next week we’ll share five illustrations within 𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘩𝘬𝘪𝘺𝘢’s pages that depict the plants found in Treaty 8 ecosystems, so stay tuned!

Yes, YES, the time has come! For what you ask? Why, Edmonton’s Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival! This year’s theme is “Barnyard Blitz”, with barnyard-inspired ice sculptures, rustic lamppost displays, a petting zoo, and more. Befitting of the festival's name, this weekend is forecasted to be a chilly one. Be sure to bundle up!

Late last year the SkirtsAfire festival was looking for a logo refresh, and we had the honour of helping them bring their vision to life.

If you’re not familiar, SkirtsAfire is an Edmontonian organization that highlights the multidisciplinary work of women in the arts. This year the festival runs from March 6-16.

Each of the Curios had a paw in designing this “ugly” Christmas sweater for the University of Alberta bookstore, featuring the beloved resident bookstore bear. You can officially grab yours now, just in time for the holidays!

The next airshed artist that we’d like to highlight is Mariah Barnaby-Norris and her wrap for the WCAS Hinton station. Check out the the airshed from all angles and a quote from Mariah on her illustration below!

Cat's out of the bag! For the last year we have partnered with Alberta Capital Airshed, The West Central Airshed Society, Canadian Women in Design and Moreso projects to wrap 3 Edmonton airsheds and 1 Hinton airshed in illustrations by 4 Albertan artists. These stations contain the equipment to monitor the air we breathe, advising to the public (through the AQHI scale) whether it’s safe/healthy to be outside. See if you can spot them the wild while you are out and about!

The first that we’ll share is by our very own Art Director, Amanda Schutz! Her airshed wrap can be spotted in the Lendrum neighbourhood of Edmonton.

The look of Northern Light Theatre 's upcoming 2024/2025 season is inspired by the classic aesthetic of film noir. Each play examines what compels humans to be monstrous, making it perfect material to share in the heart of spooky season! 👹
