Today's feature for ✨ Star Systems ✨ is everyone's fave purple and black sound system, the mighty Umbral Sound System

This rig was fundamental in getting me into sound system culture, and I wouldn't be who I am today without the Umby system 💜

Umbral Sound System is a collaborative venture and sound system established by artists dedicated to organizing inclusive events centered around bass, featuring exceptional sound quality. At Umbral, we have meticulously designed timeless speaker models that stand out for their unparalleled quality. Utilizing B&C and Eminence drivers and employing proven speaker box designs made from 13-ply Baltic Birch, our speakers undergo thorough testing to guarantee authenticity and deliver outstanding sound.

A few of Umbral's builders Nick Critch and Kelly Spriggs recently built a pair of JMOD tops which pair excellently with their 21" C2E subwoofers. They've been tested this festival season and are ready to move air and shake hips at OSPAC September 26th.

fond. is a musical project by artist shayna june, focused on tickling brains and tugging on heartstrings. a long time dance and movement enthusiast, fond. is a musical exploration of brain-body connection in the cultural context of the dancefloor. embracing a genre fluid approach to dance music, fond. pulls inspiration from moody themes, q***r dancefloors, and crying in the club.

Inspired by the west coast music scene that raised her, Lofreq has been making waves and making speakers shake all over Canada for the last decade. While making appearances in many different club settings and festival stages throughout her career, she has honed her love of djing. Her sets are always intentional and deliver technicality, versatility and a true passion for what she does.
As a seasoned dubstep head and lover of dub, grime and hip hop; she seamlessly blends flavours and plays homage to the sounds that have evolved from black culture and those before us. With a love for the classics and a passion to always seek out what’s fresh, you never know what to expect next with her sets, but it will always be just what the moment needs and combine those classic elements of dubstep we all love.
With humble beginnings in the underground, Lofreq continues to make speakers shake and uphold sound system culture everywhere she goes.

Today's feature for ✨ Star Systems ✨ AE Sound stage is one of my fave producers in Edmonton - Leo Sudden

Leo Sudden is the alias of Gabe Pashak. He started making computer music in elementary school on his grandfather’s Windows 95 PC. Not much has changed since then.

After sunsetting his previous ambient and downtempo artist project Sync Zephyr, he continued producing and mixing music for other people, such as Emily Roth and Lexene, working out of Back Burner Studios as well as his own home studio. He began his return to making music of his own in the winter of 2025, the time of year when light in the sky is as precious and unpredictable as it gets. That summer, he released the Orchids EP, four wispy club tracks evocative of the sun hitting the northern hemisphere at imperfect angles during cold seasons.

Behind the decks and in the DAW, he gravitates towards shifting grooves and iron-clad morphing soundscapes that span dubstep, deep house, techno, and pop sensibilities.

Courtney Chiasson
Hailing from Edmonton, AB; Faeble shares her musical intention through melodic rhythms, feminine energy, and the deepest of dubs. Although rooted in 140, Faeble's sound has no strict boundaries, drawing inspiration from wave, rap, halftime, and all corners of bass music.

Her enchanting selections move between the atmospheric and the heavy, weaving together sounds that are both ethereal and grounded.

Faeble has brought her sound to festival stages including Wicked Woods and Friendzy Fest, as well as events throughout Edmonton's underground bass music community. She is also a member of Umbral Sound System, where she shares in the collective's love for bass, community, and creating memorable experiences.

Whether deep and dreamy or dark and heavy, Faeble brings curiosity, intention, and a touch of mystique to every set.

Tyson Moore
Medistate brings percussive, groove-heavy 140, halftime, and broken-time ambient sounds to the dancefloor, often dipping into breakbeats and 2-step to keep things loose and unpredictable. Based in Edmonton, AB, he moves with Umbral Sound System, balancing deep crates with a growing catalog of original work. His sets lean into contrast: raw and refined, weighty and spacious, crafted for those chasing something off-center but deeply felt.

Medistate has releases with Sub Era records and Sublimated Sounds, in addition to a host of self released music.

Subkortical is a captivating bass artist known for her dynamic performances. Drawing inspiration from multi-genre artists and festival culture, her music blends UK hip hop and popular music samples with deep, bass heavy dubstep, UKG, and drum and bass sounds. This creates a synthesis of nostalgic yet fresh experiences for her audiences.

Subkortical has performed at Temple Ballroom, Union Hall, 9910, Grindstone Theatre, and Faculty Lounge. She has shared the stage with artists such Zero, Flava D, Culture Shock, Friction, Steller, and Cannabliss, becoming a staple in the Edmonton bass scene. She has recently embarked on her journey into music production, and her most recent release "R.E.M." was featured on CSJR local radio station.

Based in Edmonton, Alberta, roam. is showing his love of all things music, putting on fantastic performances across multiple genres showcasing local and upcoming artists. He blends underground beats with heavy basslines to create a moving experience that resonates with everyone from first-time festival-goers to seasoned ravers.

Drawing from UKG, breaks, dubstep, grime, jungle and beyond, his sets are a raw mix of wobbly basslines, throwback vocals, thundering grooves and a cheeky smile that makes you want to move! Having supported acts including Saka, Truth, and Taiki Nulight, and performed at some of Edmonton's most iconic massives, roam. isn’t putting on an act; he’s just a guy playing music he loves.

As an advocate for the growth of Edmonton's music community, he is dedicated to showcasing local talent and supporting fellow artists wherever possible, from running shows and regular Substation Saturday streams to keeping an ever-growing catalogue of local tunes. He is also a dedicated music historian, paying homage to the greats of the past spinning long-forgotten dubplates, and keeping the story and culture behind the music alive.

Ryan Finlay
40oz. has been a staple in Edmonton's underground electronic scene for the last several years. With multigenre sets packed full of original beats and edits, he brings a vibe that is both energetic and original. As a multi-faceted artist within Edmonton's United Bass Kollective, he has had the opportunity to hone his skills and develop a sound that is unique and sets him apart from his peers. When he's not building stages and working his 9 to 5, you can bet he's in his happy place making or playing music.
