Conserve | Inspire | Protect Raptors are some of the worlds most incredible aerial predators.

At PNWR we strive to learn as much as we can about them, and share that information with everyone we can. We hope this will help raise awareness of their importance and value in the environment, help to promote conservation, and ultimately help to preserve our natural wildlife!

Did you know, the first Saturday in September is International Vulture Awareness Day? ☀️

September 5th is a very important day! Vultures play an incredibly important role in a healthy ecosystem and deserve to be celebrated. ❤️

The goal of International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD) is to highlight the ecological importance of vultures, all while promoting their conservation worldwide. Vultures are facing a global crisis and need our help for a chance of recovery.

On September 5th at our centre, we will have vulture themed talks and displays bringing awareness to the plight of vultures. We hope to see you there! 🖤❤️

Go Gunnar! 💨

Falcons as a whole are some of the fastest animals on our planet! They work hard to gain height to stoop down towards their prey, hitting it so hard they knock their prey out on contact.

Gunnar demonstrating how the falcons work hard to gain this height- he is constantly beating his wings working hard to get above the treetops! 🌲

What a funny looking bird flying overhead! ✈️

Birds are incredibly observant of their surroundings. They need to be aware of threats nearby, if an easy food opportunity is present and so much more. I wonder what Oscar thought of the plane 🤔

✨ It’s Meet the Team Tuesday! ✨

On Tuesdays, we feature our amazing team members who work tirelessly to ensure our birds have the best quality of life. We can’t wait for you to get to know them better- this week we are meeting Ben!

✨What is your position and how long have you been with The Raptors?
Summer Camp Leader for 2 years.

🦅 Do you have a favourite species of bird to work with?
My favourite species to work with are probably owls and falcons because of their personalities. I love teaching folks about the falcons speed and their tomial tooth!

⚡️What is your favourite bird call and why?
My favourite bird call would either be the Great Horned Owl or Black-capped Chickadee as they were the first birds I learned how to ID!

Thank you for all the work you do, Ben!

Turkey Vultures may have a reputation for being somewhat aloof and anti-social, but apparently nobody told the kids!

Our trail cameras are meant to give us a less intrusive look into what happens at Turkey Vulture nest sites. Sometimes we get useful observations of feeding, chick development and parental visits. Other times… we get this.

These photos come from two different nest sites: Newton’s single chick, who we introduced in our last post, and Huxley’s two chicks which reside in another nest. All three have become very interested in the strange new object that appeared near their homes.

As the chicks get older and more mobile, they move farther from the cave opening, investigating their surroundings, stretching their wings and apparently conducting very thorough inspections of our equipment.

We love seeing the playfulness of this species, when they are so often portrayed as symbols of death and bad omens rather than the intelligent, curious birds they actually are ❤️
