Life insurance is used for many purposes besides just ensuring loved ones are taken care of. It can be a critical factor in a business partnership staying afloat and it can be used for offsetting income taxes when an estate is passed on.

Whole life , Permanent life, Universal life and Participating life are all phrases meaning insurance that with be with you for your entire life (as long as premiums are paid).
They all have a financial component but one type allows you to invest within it on a tax deferred basis and the other has growth that includes participating in the insurance company's profits in the form of dividends.
