Qi movement occurs on multiple levels:
Local movement
⢠Increased blood flow
⢠Release of tight fascia
⢠Nervous system stimulation
Meridian movement
⢠Energy spreads along the meridian pathway
⢠You may feel sensation traveling far from the needle site
Systemic movement
⢠Balances the Autonomic Nervous System
⢠Regulates hormones, immune response, digestion, sleep
This is why a point on the foot can affect the head, uterus, jaw, or emotions.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the New Year (especially winter moving toward spring) is governed by the Kidney system, which stores your Jingâyour deep life force, vitality, and long-term energy.
Acupuncture at the start of a new year is believed to âresetâ and conserve Jing, helping you plant energetic seeds for the year ahead rather than burning out early.
How you support your Kidney energy in the first weeks of the year influences your resilience, fertility (creative and physical), and longevity for months to come.
This aligns beautifully with modern observations: acupuncture during seasonal transitions helps regulate the nervous system, reduce stress hormones, and improve adaptabilityâmaking it an ideal practice for intention-setting and renewal.

Ancient texts described meridians long before anatomy was mapped â¨
Early Chinese physicians mapped energetic pathways (jing-luo) without dissecting the body.
Many traditional points correspond to areas with high concentrations of:
⢠nerves
⢠blood vessels
⢠lymphatic tissue
⢠connective tissue planes
This may explain their therapeutic effects â¨

syncing with winter in Chinese Medicine means living in harmony with the Water element, Kidney energy, and the natural rhythm of stillness and conservation.
Hereâs how you can align your body and spirit with winter:
1) Nourish Kidney Energy (Water Element)
Winter corresponds to the Kidneys and Bladderâthe storehouses of your bodyâs vital essence (Jing).
To support them:
⢠Eat warming, nourishing foods: bone broth, black beans, walnuts, sesame seeds, seaweed, root vegetables, miso, lamb, beef, ginger, and garlic.
⢠Avoid cold/raw foods that can weaken Kidney yang.
⢠Stay hydrated, but with warm liquids (soups, teas, warm water).
2) Rest and Conserve Energy
In nature, everything slows down in winter.
⢠Go to bed earlier, wake up later if possible.
⢠Limit overexertionâphysically and emotionally.
⢠Practice gentle movement (like qigong, tai chi, yin yoga).
⢠Embrace quiet and introspectionâwinter is for reflection, not expansion.
3) Support the Spirit (Shen)
Winter is a time for inner stillness and wisdom.
⢠Meditate or practice breathing exercises to calm the mind.
⢠Spend time in natureâeven just sitting by water or under the moon connects you to the Water element.
⢠Journal or reflect on what youâre ready to let go of and what seeds youâll nurture for spring.
4. Protect from Cold
⢠Keep your lower back and feet warmâthis protects Kidney yang.
⢠Avoid walking barefoot on cold floors or sitting on cold surfaces.
⢠Dress warmly, especially around the neck and lower back (the âGate of Vitalityâ).

Modern research shows that acupuncture activates the nervous system and releases natural pain-relieving chemicalsâlike endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine.
When a needle is inserted at specific points, it stimulates sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles. This triggers signals to the brain that can reduce pain perception, improve mood, and even influence organ function through the autonomic nervous system.
In brain imaging studies, scientists have observed measurable changes in activity in areas that regulate pain and emotionâoffering a bridge between ancient theory and modern neuroscience.
