Keeping Delta Safe Community Update - June 5, 2026

Proactive enforcement and investigative work remain central to how Delta Police supports community safety. Recent examples include:

E-Bike Stop Leads to Investigation and Breach Charges
File 26-9075: On May 21, 2026, at approximately 0230 hours, Delta Police observed a person riding an e-bike in North Delta without a helmet. After providing multiple false identities, he was detained for obstruction. After confirming his identity, it was determined that he was in breach of active conditions prohibiting possession of specific tools - which were located and seized. He was charged with obstruction and Fail to Comply with Undertaking and released with a future court date.

We are committed to proactively addressing unsafe riding behaviours and identifying risks that impact safety for all road users.

High-Risk Excavator Load Identified During Proactive Patrol
File 26-6176: On April 9, 2026, Delta Police conducted proactive commercial vehicle enforcement along Deltaport Way and observed a dump truck hauling a large excavator that was not secured properly. Additional concerns included loose aggregate, a tire defect, and no pre-trip inspection report. The excavator weighed approximately 32,000 lbs. The vehicle was taken out of service, tickets were issued, and a report was forwarded to CVSE.

Proactive commercial vehicle enforcement helps remove high-risk loads and unsafe equipment from Delta’s roads before they can endanger others.

Drone as First Responder
Over the last 60 days, Delta Police has conducted 27 operational Drone as First Responder (DFR) deployments in response to calls in progress, including assaults, weapons reports, thefts, break and enters, collisions, fires, and reports of incidents on the bridge. DFR missions provide rapid scene assessment before or as frontline officers arrive and are only launched in response to a call for service or training exercise - not for routine patrols.

Real-time aerial support helps officers assess and respond to incidents more quickly and effectively to calls across Delta.

: Electric kick scooters (EKS) are not permitted on public roads, bike lanes, or sidewalks in Delta, as our city is not participating in the provincial Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project.

Delta Police are prioritizing education and enforcement around illegal micromobility use and issuing tickets where necessary. Parents and guardians allowing youth under 16 years of age to operate an EKS may also be subject to fines.

We are encouraging everyone to be aware and actively work together to keep our roads safe.

Today is the beginning of Seniors Week, and we are proud to continue supporting older adults in our community through ongoing outreach, education, wellness checks, and fraud prevention awareness.

Across Delta, seniors continue to play a vital role through volunteering, mentoring, supporting local organizations, caring for loved ones, and helping strengthen the sense of connection that makes our community thrive.

This week is a timely reminder for us to take the time to check in on the seniors in our lives, whether it’s a phone call, visit, or simple conversation, and to stay informed about frauds and scams that continue to target adults in our community.

As Motorcycle Safety Month comes to an end, it remains a year-round reminder that all road users share responsibility for safe driving behaviour.

🏍️ Motorcyclists:
• Wear proper protective gear
• Stay visible at all times
• Ride defensively
• Never ride impaired or fatigued
• Adjust speed for conditions

🚙 Drivers:
• Look twice at intersections and lane changes
• Check blind spots carefully
• Give motorcycles space
• Stay focused - no distractions

Staying aware can help prevent serious collisions. Let’s all do our part to and keep everyone safe.

From our highways to our neighbourhood streets, we continue to see high-risk driving behaviours putting road users at risk.

Excessive speed, distraction, aggressive driving, and impaired driving remain major contributing factors in serious crashes across BC - and Delta is no exception.

DPD officers will continue conducting proactive enforcement throughout the community to help reduce dangerous driving behaviours and keep our roads safe for everyone.

A few extra minutes saved behind the wheel is never worth risking a collision, injury, or loss of life.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of swearing in five new Community Safety Officers (CSOs), officially welcoming them to the team as they begin their important work supporting public safety across Delta.

We are proud to note that our CSO program continues to serve as an important recruiting pathway into policing, with over 90% of CSOs going on to become sworn members in our department.

Please take a moment to say hello and wish them well as you see them out in our community.
