SECOND STOPLIGHT FOR DEEP RIVER?
Does Deep River need a second stoplight on Highway 17 at Ridge Road? Councillor Kathy Hughes will ask her council colleagues this week to support a motion asking the Ministry of Transportation to assess the need for a second light, “taking into consideration the safety of active transportation users needing to cross the highway” to access businesses and services on the south side of the highway. Hughes raised the issue at the last council meeting, warning that many people are doing the “dash and dine” across four lanes of traffic to reach the local Tim Hortons, for just one example...

D'EON TO RUN FOR THIRD TERM AS MAYOR:
Deep River Mayor Sue D’Eon is seeking a third term in office as head of council. D’Eon first ran for election in 2018, laying down three goals at that time (open government, infrastructure, and community) and feels council has made great strides in all three of those areas...

FOUR SEASONS SETTLES EAST END LAND ISSUE:
The Four Seasons Conservancy (FSC) announced last week that it has purchased a "conservation easement" on the property located at 42 Wintergreen Lane. In addition, FSC and the owners of the other properties on Wintergreen Lane are finalizing the process to place conservation easements on those owners’ properties as well. COMMENDATION FOR RIVER RESCUE:
Jackson Broome and Lyndon Broome received a commendation from the Deep River Police Service on Tuesday for their heroism during an incident which took place along the Ottawa River on May 19, in which a person in a canoe overturned and was in distress in the water. Police, paramedics and firefighters could see the canoe from the marina but had no means of getting to it. Fortunately, Jackson and Lyndon were close by and had a small aluminum boat with a motor, and they were able to go out into the river and pull the male youth, who had been in the water for some time, into their boat, and bring him back to shore...

COURT REJECTS NSDF APPEAL:
Another setback for the proposed Near Surface Disposal Facility at the Chalk River Laboratories. The Federal Court of Appeal has dismissed an application by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories to overturn a previous decision by Justice Russel Zinn that CNL failed to consider “all reasonable alternatives” in siting the NSDF. In doing so, he said, it failed to prove that the NSDF is the “best solution” to protect bats and turtles listed under the Species At Risk Act (SARA)...

NEW APARTMENTS PLANNED FOR LAND BEHIND JL GRAY:
The town of Deep River will hold a public meeting as part of its regular council meeting next Wednesday to hear an application for a zoning bylaw change that would allow the construction of a new 42-unit apartment building at the corner of Forest Avenue and Montcalm St. A “planning justification report” by the firm Jp2g says the application is consistent with the provincial planning statement as it supports the development of “complete communities” and is an “efficient use” of land fully serviced by municipal water and sewer...

RIDER KILLED IN OFF-ROAD COLLISION:
Members of the Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating a fatal off-road collision that occurred in the town of Laurentian Hills.
Police say that on Saturday, May 2, at approximately 4:45 pm, police were notified of a single-vehicle off-road collision involving a dirt bike on Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) Trail 128. Renfrew County paramedics and officers from the UOV OPP detachment attended the scene. Preliminary investigation found that the dirt bike struck a tree and the rider was ejected.
Despite lifesaving efforts by emergency responders and bystanders, a 27-year-old male from Petawawa was pronounced deceased at the scene. The name of the deceased has not been released. First reports of the collision indicated that it took place in Petawawa, not Laurentian Hills.
The OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
