You know the great thing about Jediโs? Theyโre protectors. Guardians.
They are a part of something bigger than themselves and used their great power for good.
Thatโs what we want to be in this world. Protect it. Use the power and voices we have to protect our planet, and the beautiful beings living on it.
Who wants to join us on this mission? ๐

I'm a big fan of podcasts, and mid 2019 I came across my new fav Wardrobe Crisis hosted by Clare . In the last episode of 2019, Clare interviewed the two founders of , Joey Swillinger and Tim Brown. I first heard of Allbirds this summer at where members of the team were raving to me about them. Near the end of the podcast, Joey said this line which I felt worth sharing.
It's something that I've seen mentioned in many ways this past year, and is such an important reminder for those trying to make waves of change but feeling on shakey ground. โ
โ
The issues we are facing right now, ๐ข๐ฏ๐บ ๐ช๐ด๐ด๐ถ๐ฆ๐ด we ๐ฆ๐ท๐ฆ๐ณ face actually, are always more nuanced than we typically like to admit. We like to simplify things, and find clear answers that can be handled quickly without much effort, and if you break issues down enough, typically you can do that! But we often don't allow ourselves this grace when we are tackling the problems we want to solve in our own lives, or in the brands we run. โ
โ
So ๐ฎ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐น๐ผ๐๐ฒ, its okay if you don't have things perfect right from the start! perfection is not only a fallacy, but its going to prevent you from building a tools to get one step closer to your goals, and if we aren't individually stepping towards those goals, then as a collective we suffer as well. โ
โ
Added note: It might be weird for a ๐ค๐ญ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ brand to be sharing a quote from a ๐ด๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ฆ brand, but 1) I would rather be sharing stoke and promoting others with similar values. 2) we make different things, not to mention 3) I'm still small fry. With that note however, do't be surprised if you see me raving about other brands I love in the future! ๐ Even as Wayward Kin grows.โ

Do you have any Eucalyptus clothes in your closet? You might be thinking that's kind of a weird question... but a very popular fabric called Lyocell is actually made from this fast growing plant, along with a few other sources of wood cellulose or pulp. ๐ฟโ
โ
Lyocell is often called a ๐ด๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ช-๐ด๐บ๐ฏ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ต๐ช๐ค, ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ค๐ฐ๐ท๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ฐ๐ณ ๐ณ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ง๐ช๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ณ, because of the chemical baths required to transform raw material into the soft fabric we recognize. Given this, there is different quality available and some natural fiber fans are on the fence if this fast growing, biodegradable material is truly . Within the lyocell world, there are suppliers who have created a ๐ค๐ญ๐ฐ๐ด๐ฆ๐ฅ ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฑ ๐ด๐บ๐ด๐ต๐ฆ๐ฎ to ensure little chemical waste. One of the most notible suppliers (by Lenzing) also works to ensure that their wood sourcing is local and replanted exceeding the amount originally harvested. There is no denying that done right,
I share all this because in an attempt to show more of the process for Wayward Kin. Lyocell is the game plan for Wayward Kin 2020, and I'm in the midst of getting my fabric supply all sorted out โจcan't wait to offer pieces made from this amazing cozy fabric soon ๐โ

Been a minute! One year since a post... thanks for sticking around ๐
And a decade in the rear view with so much change. As typical, I've been quiet online both here and on my private account. The past couple yrs have been full of research and preparation for big change which I can't wait to share as the pieces come together. Before that however, I want to appreciate some parts of this past decade I'm so happy to have experienced.
2nd ๐ท I got my first taste of brand community through Newschoolers.com and got to send sweaters around north America (pre 2010)
3rd - through the ski world I had the opertunity to sponsor incredible athletes like Logan
4th - played around with tons of fabrics, at one point made a towel hoodie! Almost broke my machine ๐
5th - in 2015 I had moved back to the CV and began deeply considering where I wanted to this the company, rebranded from Purplejumpsuit to Wayward Kin. I worked with a designer and had my first pattern professionally drafted โ๏ธ
6th - in 2016/17 I began connecting more with other textile businesses in the area, one of these moments included going to Powell River to take part in the eCouture Fashion Show
7th - in 2018/19 I attended Planet Textiles, first in Vancouver and then in Spain where I also attended ITMA and saw a more in depth scope of the textile industry
All of this (and a lot more, I've excluded tons as instagram is hard ๐
) has been a path leading me to the brand I want to offer the world. It's been fun looking back at the past decade, appreciating where I've been and understanding how its lead me to where Wayward Kin is going ๐

Some honest (and long) talk. I have this thought process that feels pretty paralyzing sometimes. It affects my mood, slows down my life, and feels like it seriously hinders my business. I'm constantly overthinking my impact on the world around me, knowing I'm not doing enough to curb my own pollution and feeling under-informed about the best ways to mitigate the situation.
I've wanted to share the journey of trying to build a sustainability-focused brand with Wayward Kin. But I freeze up seeing all the ways I'm not doing enough, not to mention completely second guessing if making clothing is not just the worst thing I could do. Contributing to an industry already flush with poor quality and unethical labour practices. Even if my products are made differently, don't we already have enough options? So, I go radio silent as I try to navigate the newest fluorescent red flag I see in my own brand.
For some openness - right now, that hurdle is the 45% recycled polyester in my garments. I wanted h**p, and the best I could find (so far) was a blend of h**p and recycled poly. Don't get me wrong, that's pretty damn cool (upcycled pop bottles turned into clothing!) But I know I can do better.
In my personal life, I also see aspects that I need to change. Habits of engrained consumerism that I would like to adjust. Events and clean-ups I would like to attend, and many I do partake in. Then, I see a car behind me in the ferry lineup left running for over an hour just for the comfort of the owner. I experience ordering a smoothie and bringing my own stainless bottle to use only to have it left by the staff on the counter and handed a plastic cup. These things happen and I wonder what the point is when I can't do so much as I'd like and others don't seem to care in the slightest.
I've been thinking a lot about this lately, and actively trying to bring more positivity to my mindset. As I look at how to grow Wayward Kin into something more, or halt it and move on. I want to grow this business, as a sharing tool to hopefully inspire others and as a motivator for me to know that change is possible. Right now, that means learning how to make positive change in the fashion world, one step at a time.
I also want to be more open on my journey with sustainability and share in it with others. Soโฆ if there is something you want to learn about, please ask me. If you know of better alternatives to things I am doing, please share them with me. If you just want to geek out with me, please do. My goal for 2019 is to be a better human for the planet, myself, and all the beautiful people I'm sharing this experience with. โจ๐
Thanks for reading this, if any crazy folks got to the end.

A side project at the moment.
I dont understand the trend of off the shelf destressed jeans and look forward to it passing. But as the 3rd owner of this pair, I'm happy to make some adjustments to better fit my wardrobe (seriously though they are so so cold without patches!) I've opted to use merino from a retired pair of longjohns instead of denim, interested in seeing how it works out.
I have a large mending pile at the moment, some items I'll keep, and some I will fix up before donating. Do you show pieces love as they age? ๐

A current side project which I am redoing a large section of since it was knit a bit too tight the first time around ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
Back before Wayward Kin I used to also make toques along with sewn garments... This project is reigniting some embers, may need to journey down that road again soon.
Ohh all the fun possibilities! ๐ซ
