Tutoring

It’s been some time since I last posted as I’ve been very busy with my tutoring. I am however looking for any students who are interested in some tutoring time over the summer. I’d be interested in hearing from any students who are a little behind or need to catch up on a few academic areas before the new school year starts. PM me if interested 🙂

My story:
I’m a recently retired teacher & administrator from SD #71 Comox Valley Schools. I taught 5 years before moving to the Comox Valley in 1991. I have loved living and working in the Comox Valley where I spent 15 yrs teaching at Highland Secondary and then moved on to administrative roles at Highland, Vanier and Glacier View Secondary for the remaining 15 yrs of my career.

My thoughts:
Personal – I have worked with and supported a wide range of students over my educational career. Each one unique in the way they learn, challenges they face, confidence, resiliency, etc. I believe educational strategies and approaches to learning need to be personally tailored for each individual student.

Relationships, Relationships, Relationships – the importance of a positive student / teacher relationship has been well researched and well documented in the education world. I believe one of my key strengths as a teacher and administrator was my ability to genuinely connect with my students and inject energy and humour into the work we did together.

Coaching – I think students need to believe in themselves more.......period. Confidence is a critical component to success in just about everything we do in life yet poor self-esteem and a lack of resiliency skills in some youth make the road to academic success a real struggle. Positive coaching as well as building resiliency and self-confidence in youth is also an important layer of support I can provide.

My recent role as a school district administrator has shown me that everyone has their own comfort level with the ongoing pandemic and I fully respect this. I live with my wife and 3 young children in a fully vaccinated household and have a comfortable setting for my tutoring services. In lieu of the health, safety and well-being of everyone, I am available to provide virtual tutorial support for students if requested.

It has been another challenging year for students as they try to move forward with their education while managing an ever-changing and often unfamiliar landscape at school. As always and especially now, it’s imperative we do our absolute best to find ways to support our children and keep them moving forward with their academic success. Whether your child is being challenged by a tough unit in science, they want some extra help with basic algebra or they’re just someone who needs a little ongoing weekly support to stay on top of their courses, I would be interested in a conversation to see if I can be helpful. My tutoring fees work on a sliding scale format: I work from base rate and augment my fees in response to additional research & requirements re: IEP, Psych Ed. reports, etc. I can also be quite flexible in tutoring times during the week.
