👅 Why is it so important to eliminate thumb sucking early?

Thumb sucking may seem harmless, but prolonged habits can significantly impact a child’s oral and facial development. The constant pressure of a thumb against the palate can contribute to a narrow upper jaw, altered facial growth, dental crowding, open bites, and improper tongue posture.

A healthy palate should be broad and well-developed, creating adequate space for the tongue to rest comfortably against the roof of the mouth. This supports proper breathing, swallowing, speech, and facial growth.

✨ So how do we help keep the palate wide?

✔️ Address oral habits such as thumb sucking, finger sucking, and prolonged pacifier use.
✔️ Encourage nasal breathing.
✔️ Promote proper tongue posture with the tongue resting on the palate.
✔️ Support healthy chewing habits with age-appropriate textured foods.
✔️ Identify and address airway concerns early.

When palatal expansion is needed, combining expansion with myofunctional therapy can be incredibly beneficial. Expansion creates the space, but myofunctional therapy helps teach the muscles how to function correctly within that new space.

During expansion, myofunctional exercises can help:
🔹 Establish proper tongue-to-palate posture
🔹 Improve nasal breathing patterns
🔹 Correct swallowing mechanics
🔹 Reduce the risk of relapse after treatment
🔹 Support optimal facial growth and development

Early intervention isn’t just about straight teeth—it’s about creating the foundation for lifelong healthy breathing, eating, speaking, and facial development.

❓Did you know that a simple habit like thumb sucking can influence the growth of the jaws, airway, and face? Have you noticed oral habits affecting your child’s development? Share your thoughts or questions below!

What’s the *best age* to start myofunctional therapy? 🤔

Short answer: **earlier than you think—but it’s never too late.**

Myofunctional therapy can begin as young as **3–4 years old** (but 6-7 when they have self awareness will be easier to have compliance and success) especially if there are signs like:
• Mouth breathing
• Thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use
• Tongue thrust
• Speech or feeding challenges

Why so early? Because we’re working with *growth and development*. When we guide proper oral habits during these formative years, we can positively influence:
✨ Jaw development
✨ Airway health
✨ Facial growth patterns

That said—**teens and adults benefit too** 🙌
It’s not about age limits, it’s about addressing function. Whether you’re 5 or 55, improving tongue posture, breathing, and muscle patterns can make a real difference in sleep, orthodontic stability, and overall health.

💡 The “best” time to start?
**As soon as symptoms are noticed.**

If you’re unsure whether you or your child might benefit, feel free to reach out or book a discovery call 💬

Myofunctional therapy and treatments like massage, chiropractic care, and physiotherapy can all help with TMJ issues—but they work in fundamentally different ways.
The core difference
* Myofunctional therapy focuses on retraining how your muscles function every day—especially your tongue, lips, and jaw habits.
* The others (massage, chiro, physio) mainly focus on treating the symptoms or mechanical dysfunction in muscles and joints.

🧠 Myofunctional therapy (habit + muscle retraining)
This approach targets the root behavioral and neuromuscular patterns behind TMJ.
It’s especially tied to things like:
* Tongue posture (should rest on the roof of your mouth)
* Mouth breathing vs nasal breathing
* Swallowing patterns
* Clenching or resting jaw tension
In conditions like Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction, these patterns often keep the jaw under constant strain—even when you’re not aware of it.
What makes it different:
* You practice exercises daily to reprogram muscle patterns
* It aims for long-term change, not just relief
* It addresses why your jaw is overloaded in the first place
👉 Think of it as “physical therapy for your habits.”

🧩 How they work best together
These approaches aren’t mutually exclusive—they actually complement each other well:
* Massage / physio / chiro → reduce pain and improve mobility
* Myofunctional therapy → prevents the problem from coming back

🧭 Simple analogy
* Massage/chiro/physio = fixing a sore shoulder
* Myofunctional therapy = fixing the way you use your shoulder all day so it stops getting sore

If your TMJ feels like it keeps coming back despite treatment, that’s usually a sign there’s a habit or resting pattern (like tongue position or clenching) that hasn’t been addressed yet.

If you want, I can help you figure out whether your symptoms lean more toward muscular tension, joint issues, or habit-driven patterns—that usually points to which approach will help most. Call and book your discovery call or myofunctional therapy assessment today! ☺️

Struggling with speech clarity isn’t just about the tongue—it’s about how all the muscles of the face and mouth work together. 💬

Myofunctional therapy focuses on strengthening and retraining these muscles to support proper tongue posture, breathing, and oral function. When these foundations are in place, speech can become clearer, more precise, and easier to produce.

Whether it’s difficulty with certain sounds, tongue thrust, or oral habits that interfere with speech, targeted exercises can make a meaningful difference over time.

Small muscle changes → big communication improvements.

Your health is more than just what you eat or how often you work out—it starts with how you breathe, sleep, and function every single day.
Myofunctional therapy focuses on strengthening and retraining the muscles of the face, tongue, and airway to support better breathing, improved sleep, proper posture, and overall wellness. When these foundational systems are working with your body instead of against it, everything else becomes easier—more energy, better focus, and even improved digestion.
Think of it as an investment, not an expense. You’re not just addressing symptoms—you’re getting to the root of issues that impact your daily life and long-term health. Small, intentional changes now can prevent bigger challenges later.
Your body deserves that kind of care. 🤍

Snoring isn’t just a nuisance—it can be a sign that your body isn’t getting the quality rest it needs.

When you snore, your airway is partially blocked, which can reduce oxygen levels and disrupt your sleep cycle. Over time, this can lead to:
• Daytime fatigue
• Brain fog and poor concentration
• Increased stress on the heart
• Higher risk of sleep-related breathing disorders

The good news? There’s a natural, non-invasive way to help.

Myofunctional therapy focuses on strengthening the muscles of the tongue, mouth, and airway. By improving muscle tone and proper breathing patterns, it can help:
✔ Reduce or eliminate snoring
✔ Support better airflow during sleep
✔ Improve sleep quality and energy levels
✔ Promote proper nasal breathing

Better sleep isn’t a luxury—it’s essential for your overall health.

If you or someone you love snores, it might be time to look beyond the noise and address the root cause. Your body will thank you. 💙

Myofunctional therapy - exercises to retrain the muscles of your tongue, lips and airway is a meaningful and often overlooked tool for improving athletic performance. It can be especially relevant in sports like CrossFit and Hyrox where both sports punish poor breathing, sloppy posture and inefficient recovery!

Myo can improve breathing mechanics, airway stability and neuromuscular efficiency.

Nasal breathing - increases O2 uptake, produces nitric acid for better blood flow and reduces over breathing which causes energy waste.

Better endurance + less fatigue = better performance

Improved sleep and recovery - if you strengthen the oropharyngeal muscles you can reduce airway collapse during sleep and help with achieving nasal breathing, this improving sleep quality

Better sleep = faster recovery, improved reaction time + better hormone regulation

Nervous system regulation- proper breathing triggers the autonomic nervous system to reduce fight-or-flight and improve focus, composure and stress control

During high pressure athletic performance this helps with mental clarity and calmness!

Posture and core stability - tongue posture is linked to head and neck alignment and high can improve spinal positioning and breathing mechanics to indirectly support core stability and movement efficiency

Posture inpacts everything from sprint mechanics to lifting form!

Jaw stability and force production - some research and anecdotal evidence suggests better jaw alignment and muscle balance improves force during transfer lifts and reduces clenching and assymetry

Subtle but over time it adds up especially for repetitive sports!

This is what early orthodontic intervention can look like! My little one had a significant open bite that has closed! It’s hard to tell because she also exfoliated some primary teeth but great results! This appliance will remain in place until her expander goes in once she has permanent molars!
