Geologists can map rock hundreds of metres down without digging a single hole. One of the ways they do it is by measuring magnetism.

Different rocks carry different magnetic signatures. Some are rich in magnetic minerals, others barely register, and the boundaries between them often mark exactly the features a geologist cares about: buried structures, faults, and intrusions of one rock type into another. A magnetic survey measures tiny variations in the Earth's magnetic field across a property, and those variations quietly trace out the geology hidden beneath the surface.

The survey itself is fairly low-tech to run. A geophysicist walks or flies a grid across the property carrying a magnetometer, taking continuous readings, while a fixed base station records natural daily drift in the field so it can be corrected out. The result is a map where highs and lows reveal the shape of the rock below, structures you would otherwise have to drill to find.

Here's why it matters. Magnetics is one of the earliest and cheapest tools in exploration, which is exactly why it comes first. It does not detect gold. What it does is reveal the architecture of a property, the faults and contacts that gold-bearing systems often follow, so a team can narrow a large area down to the structures worth testing. It points to where to look, not to what is there.

If you follow exploration, this is a good reminder that a lot of the real work happens before anyone drills. Reading the ground first is how disciplined teams decide where the drill is even worth pointing.

The biggest gold buyers in the world are not traders chasing a hot streak. They are governments.

For years, central banks have been among the steadiest and largest buyers of gold on the planet, quietly adding to national reserves. It is worth understanding why, because it says something about the role gold plays that stocks and currencies do not.

A few reasons drive it. Gold is a store of value that no single government can print, devalue, or control, which makes it useful for spreading risk across a country's reserves. It carries no counterparty, meaning its worth does not depend on another institution staying solvent. And in times of geopolitical or financial stress, it has a long history of holding value when other assets wobble. For a central bank, that combination is less about chasing a return and more about resilience.

If you follow the sector, this is one of those quiet forces worth keeping in view. The daily price gets the attention, but some of the most patient buyers in the market are working on a very different time horizon.

Before a drill rig ever shows up, someone walks the ground.

Surface geology is the cheapest information in exploration, and it drives almost every expensive decision that follows. A geologist covering a property is reading a handful of things at once.

Rock type, because certain host rocks are far more likely to carry mineralisation than others. Structure, meaning the faults and fractures that act as plumbing for metal-bearing fluids. Alteration, where original rock has been chemically changed by those fluids, often showing up as bleaching or clay minerals. And oxidation, the rusty staining that can hint at sulphides breaking down below.

None of it proves anything on its own. Together it builds a picture of whether a system was active here, and where. That picture is what turns a large land package into a short list of targets worth spending real money on.

How does exploration drilling actually work?

A drill rig cuts a narrow hole into the ground and pulls up a record of the rock it passed through. Diamond drilling recovers a solid cylinder of rock called core. Reverse circulation drilling is faster and cheaper, and returns rock chips instead.

Either way, the goal is the same: a vertical slice of geology that a geologist can log metre by metre. One hole is a single data point. It takes a pattern of holes to start understanding the shape and continuity of what's underground, which is why exploration is a step-by-step process rather than a single answer.

The best rock in the world is worth very little if you cannot get a truck to it.

That sounds obvious, but it is one of the most common reasons exploration projects stall. A property can carry genuinely interesting geology and still never advance, because the road washes out, the nearest crew is nine hours away, the permitting authority has no framework for the work, or the drilling season is six weeks long.

Location is not a footnote in exploration. It is a cost structure.

McNary sits in Yavapai County, Arizona, approximately 24.5 road miles southwest of Prescott. It is reached by a combination of paved and unpaved roads, with historic routes running toward the former workings. Prescott is a working town with services, and Arizona has a long and continuous mining history, an established permitting framework, and an experienced local contractor and labour pool. Weather allows fieldwork through most of the year.

None of that tells you anything about what is in the ground. Geology decides that, and at McNary no modern drilling has been completed to date. What access and jurisdiction decide is how much every future metre costs, how quickly a crew can mobilise, and whether a program that looks good on paper can actually be executed.

Two properties with identical geology can have very different futures based on nothing more than a road and a permitting office.

Final access requirements for any future exploration, including agency authorizations and any applicable bonding, will be addressed as part of program planning.

You can find a gold deposit without ever seeing gold.

Here is how. As rock breaks down near surface over thousands of years, tiny amounts of the metals inside it get released and mixed into the soil sitting on top. We are talking about quantities measured in parts per billion, invisible to the eye and far too small to matter economically on their own. But they leave a fingerprint.

Exploration crews walk a grid across the property and collect soil at fixed spacing, sometimes hundreds of samples across a single target area. Each one goes to a lab, gets assayed for a suite of elements, and the results get plotted on a map. Where the numbers climb above the local background level, you have what geologists call an anomaly. It does not prove anything is there. It tells you where the rock underneath is worth a closer look.

That matters because drilling is expensive and soil sampling is not. The real value of a geochemical survey is not just showing you where to drill. It is showing you the ninety percent of a property where you should not.

At McNary, in Yavapai County, Arizona, 704 soil samples have been collected, alongside 120 rock samples and approximately 60 line kilometres of ground magnetic surveying across the 31 claim block. That work has identified multiple priority targets across the property. No modern drilling has been completed there to date.
