Through an apprenticeship, you can earn:

✔️ Certificate of Apprenticeship (CoA) – Awarded to registered apprentices who successfully complete all requirements of their trades training program.

✔️ Certificate of Qualification (CoQ) – A provincial credential that certifies you to work in your trade throughout British Columbia.

✔️ Red Seal Endorsement (RSE) – A nationally recognized credential that allows you to work in your trade anywhere in Canada.

Apprenticeships are a great way to gain hands-on experience, earn while you learn, and build a rewarding career in the skilled trades.

Thousands of people will benefit from B.C.’s $241-million investment in skilled trades training, expanding access to good-paying jobs for people in British Columbia, while ensuring employers have workers to deliver major projects.

The investment will:
• double annual funding to SkilledTradesBC from $107 million to $214 million by 2028-29
• create as many as 5,000 new trades training seats in 2026 at public post-secondary institutions and non-profit union trainers, helping more people enter training and move onto job sites sooner
• reduce wait lists for high-demand trades by expanding program capacity
• increase per-seat funding across apprenticeship programs that lead to SkilledTradesBC credentials, helping trainers manage rising costs for equipment, curriculum and instruction
• establish the Look West: Workforce Readiness Initiative, a strategy designed to improve access to training in rural and remote communities, which responds directly to employer needs
• expand skilled trades certification, starting with tower and mobile crane operators

During the COVID-19 lockdown, Elaine Kennedy bought a “really cheap cabin” that had been largely neglected and decided to renovate it. What started as a practical project quickly became something more. Over a couple of years, she renovated the space herself, learning basic carpentry skills through books, online resources, and hands-on trial and error. Along the way, she discovered both a new skill set and a new career direction.

“It was really cool to realize what I could do with some patience and elbow grease,” Kennedy says. That realization, combined with burnout from a career in consulting, led her to apply to the Carpentry Foundation Program at Coast Mountain College (CMTN) in 2024. Today, she is enrolled in Carpentry Apprenticeship Level 2, where she’s continuing to build on her self-taught beginnings with formal training and practical experience.
