⛈️🐾 Is your fur baby terrified of thunderstorms? 🐾⛈️
When the sky starts rumbling, our pets don't understand what's happening. The sudden flashes, loud booms, and even the drop in barometric pressure can send their anxiety into overdrive.
If your dog or cat spends storms shaking, hiding, or pacing, you aren't helpless! Here is a checklist of vet-approved comfort strategies to try before the next storm rolls in:
👕 1. The "Hug" Effect (Thundershirts)
Pressure wraps like Thundershirts apply gentle, constant pressure to your pet's torso. It works exactly like swaddling a human baby, drastically lowering their nervous system's fight-or-flight response.
🌿 2. Calming Pheromones (Adaptil or Feliway)
Plug-in diffusers or collars mimic the natural, comforting pheromones mothers release to soothe their litters. Use Adaptil for dogs and Feliway for cats to create a passive zone of security.
🦴 3. Functional Calming Treats
Look for supplements containing natural calming ingredients like L-theanine, Chamomile, Valerian Root, or Melatonin. Pro-tip: Give these to your pet 30-45 minutes before the storm starts for the best effect!
🎶 4. White Noise & Sound Masking
The sudden contrast of silence followed by a loud boom is what triggers the startle reflex. Turn on a fan, put on a white noise machine, or play classical music (there are even specific "Through a Dog’s Ear" playlists on Spotify!) to drown out the noise.
🏰 5. Create a "Safe Haven"
Let them choose where they feel safest—even if it's a dark closet or the bathroom. Bring their favorite bed there, cover their crate with a heavy blanket to block out flashes of lightning, and leave them be.
❌ What NOT to do: Never punish your pet for showing fear, and try not to overly coddle them with high-pitched "it's okay, it's okay" energy, which can sometimes accidentally reinforce that there is something to be afraid of. Just stay calm, confident, and present.
⭐Any questions about products to help, give the clinic a call! We'd love to help you out! We love all the above options because they are a great way to help your pet when we aren't ready/don't want to jump straight into medications!⭐
