On May 29, 2026, Nicholas WESEEN was sentenced to 8 years in federal custody after being convicted of criminal animal cruelty offenses involving the torture and killing of five pet rabbits.

The case was investigated jointly by Calgary Police Service and Calgary Humane Society following a report in 2023. Brad Nichols, Director of Enforcement for Calgary Humane Society, described these offenses as an anomaly in animal protection, but also the most concerning, given the Link between animal cruelty and interpersonal violence as a predictor and an indicator. The sentence is a significant and provincially record-breaking incarceration outcome. While progress tends to move slowly, the adjudication of violent animal cruelty crime, recently, is heartening to those enforcing the mandate.

Calgary Humane Society submitted a community impact statement, a relatively new opportunity in animal cruelty cases, which was read alongside several others during sentencing submissions. This file is a demonstration that animal protection is a community responsibility that can have positive effect on human safety and wellbeing. Without that report from a concerned citizen, this may have gone unchecked entirely.
