Accounting for the shape of the hanger and making it appear that the beam is tight with the tab at the top. Should I go by this project and see how the connection has aged.

Sometime it’s not about running a saw perfectly straight but about making the materials conform to what it should be, plumb level and square. Just because you’re a rough carpenter doesn’t mean your work is rough. Cabinet level scribe work (cabinetry was where my journey of wood butchery started) to get a level base for further formwork to build on.

Because the riser at the top is used to hang the stringer and not encroaching on the distance of the run (as the rest are) the distance needs to be adjusted by the thickness of the material. This is by no means an all situations requirement but it is required understanding of how materials physical thickness affect the assembly as a whole.
