June's warmer days have made sightings of the Western Tiger Swallowtail much more frequent in the Castlegar area!
Three things you may not have known about the Western Tiger Swallowtail:
🦋In flight, Western Tiger Swallowtails mostly glide, with fewer wing beats compared to other butterflies
🦋They often congregate in large numbers at mud puddles (a behaviour called “puddling”) to drink water and obtain mineral nutrients
🦋Western Tiger Swallowtails only live 6-14 days in butterfly form
