Today we celebrate the spectrum!!
*Autism is a neurotype, not an illness. Itās a different structuring of the brain from neurotypical (non-autistic) people that results in a different way of seeing and experiencing the world.
*An estimated 1 in 54 people are autistic.
*High functioning and low functioning labels arenāt useful and in most cases can be harmful. For an autistic person, functioning can fluctuate from day-to-day or even hour-to-hour, and it means different things to different people. Labelling somebody high functioning dismisses their struggles while congratulating them for being able to appear ālike the rest of usā. On the flip, labelling somebody low functioning ignores their accomplishments and strengths with a blanket assumption. These labels can directly affect an autisticās ability to access supports they need.
*Identity first language is preferred by most people in the autistic community. This is saying that somebody is autistic as opposed to saying they are a person with autism. Autism isnāt something they have, itās not an illness, it is who they are and how they process their experience in the world. (Similar to how you wouldnāt say that a gay person is a person with homosexuality.)
*There is no cure for autism, nor should there be. Autism is a developmental difference in the brain, not a disease. If a cure existed, it would be called eugenics. Master race kind of stuff.
*The blue puzzle piece you may be seeing a lot this month is not a particularly welcome symbol of autism within the community. It is a symbol popularized by autistic hate group Autism Speaks.
*Autism Speaks is a hate group that spends its time and resources vilifying autism and promoting harmful autistic stereotypes including the idea that autism is a wretched illness. They are vocal in the need for a cure, have no autistic representation on their board, and spend only 4% of their annual budget actually helping autistic individuals.
*The better symbol for autistic representation is the rainbow infinity sign. The rainbow infinity has started to grow to include all neurodivergence, including conditions like VAST (ADHD).
