Data centers are huge buildings filled with nothing but computers, that eat gigawatts of electrical power, take millions of gallons of water to cool, and have become the most eloquent money pits to ever hit Wall Street.

Parking rules... but make them clear! 💁‍♂️

We’re temporarily relaxing parking rules on residential City streets as we review them over the next year, with changes staying in place until the citywide review is complete. Here’s what this means:

On street parking is permitted for up to 5 hours, unless otherwise posted.

Lower boulevard parking is allowed, as long as you are not parking on the grass, overhanging on the sidewalk or don’t extend onto the road. 👀

The Atanasoff–Berry Computer (ABC) is often regarded as one of the most important predecessors of the modern computer. The machine was built between 1939 and 1942 at Iowa State College in the United States by physics professor John Vincent Atanasoff and his graduate student Clifford Berry.
The ABC was specifically designed to solve complex systems of linear equations. Although it was not programmable like modern computers, it introduced several revolutionary concepts. Most notably, it was the first machine to use vacuum tubes for electronic calculations, making it much faster than the mechanical calculating devices of its era. It also used binary arithmetic—the system of zeros and ones that remains the foundation of virtually all modern computers.
The machine contained around 300 vacuum tubes, weighed more than 700 pounds (320 kg), and was roughly the size of a desk. Data was stored using an innovative memory system based on rotating drums and capacitors. This allowed the ABC to perform about 30 additions or subtractions per second, an impressive achievement for its time.
One of its main limitations was that it could not store programs and was not fully automatic. Many operations still required human intervention through switches and controls. For this reason, it is generally not considered the first modern computer.
Nevertheless, the ABC had a profound influence on the development of computing. For many years, the more famous ENIAC was credited as the first electronic computer. However, in 1973, a U.S. court ruled that several key ideas used in ENIAC had originated from Atanasoff’s earlier work. As a result, the ABC gained long-overdue recognition as a pioneering achievement in computer history.
In summary, the Atanasoff–Berry Computer was not a modern computer in the full sense of the term, but it was a groundbreaking machine that helped lay the foundations of the digital age.
