Welcome to the good life, little bugs! 🐞🐝
A few weeks ago, we received a request to help six kittens living behind a business in Cambridge. Unfortunately, at the time we had no foster space available and couldn't step in. But the wonderful staff there didn't give up. They continued feeding the kittens, keeping them safe, and reached out again. This time, we were able to say yes.
Sadly, while they waited, four of the kittens developed botflies in their necks and needed urgent veterinary care.
What could have been a challenging trapping mission turned out to be one of the easiest we've ever had—all six kittens were safely trapped in just 10 minutes!
The incredible team at AprilVets Cambridge welcomed them immediately and provided exceptional care. They removed the botflies, cleaned and treated the wounds, and even neutered the group's only male. It was no small task, as these 12-week-old kittens had very little experience being handled and were understandably nervous. Thankfully, only one decided to put up much of a chase!
Dr. Shelby and Amber did an amazing job caring for the kittens, while Dr. Quinn treated the more serious wounds under sedation and completed the neuter.
We happily handed over naming rights to our veterinary team, who chose the most adorable bug-themed names:
🐞 Firefly
🦗 Cricket
🐞 June Bug
🪲 Potato Bug
🐞 Lady Bug
🐝 Bumble Bee
And in a fun twist, both orange tabbies turned out to be girls!
These little bugs will spend the next few weeks building confidence, learning that people can be trusted, and continuing their recovery. The girls will also need to be spayed before they're ready for their forever homes, but they should be available for adoption soon.

We are here at Pet Smart Cambridge's Adoptkon Weekene (600 hespeler rd) with lots of kittens and a mom. We're here today till 5 pm and tomorrow 10 to 3pm.

WOW 500 ADOPTIONS (and it’s probably going to go higher quickly with 24 cats up for adoption and the adoption event this weekend!)
Almost exactly 5 years ago my friend Sue and I were sitting at a diner mapping out a Cat Rescue. In September of 2021, we put it all to fruition and CHCR was born. We had long term goals but, at the time all we could think about was surviving that first year, and then to keep going and growing.
Then in 2024, Sue moved on to warmer pastures, and we’ve been blessed with Julie, and then Lee-Anne stepping into fill that large vacancy. I’m proud (and so is Sue from afar) of how we’re still here 5 years later and that we’ve hit a huge milestone of 500 adoptions. Not bad from 2 girls in a diner with a dream to create a supportive group of volunteers who love cats.
And we’ve done just that with the most amazing fosters, who usually do more than just foster and some who have been with us since that first year! As well as Ashley who stepped in to help and then take over the Adoption Coordinator role. We couldn’t pay for it without Karley & our fundraising team and army of crocheters and no one would know about it without Kayla our social media expert. And finally, of course our supporters!!
I’m happy we’ve helped give 500 cats a life off the streets, to know love, a full belly and a soft bed! Happy that for some we’ve stopped the cycle of litters born for feral moms and trying to make a small dent in the absurd feral population.
