Vermiculite insulation, pretty good chance this contains asbestos but would have to be tested to be sure. You are allowed to cover it with new insulation but should be disclosed to buyers when selling.
Due to its heat-resistant and insulating qualities, asbestos was heavily utilized in manufacturing and construction before 1990. In older properties, it is commonly hidden in:
Insulation: Vermiculite, pipe wrap, and furnace insulation.
Drywall & Plaster: Joint compounds, caulking, and putty.
Tiles: Vinyl floor and ceiling tiles.
Exterior: House siding and roofing shingles.
