Miss me? I'm back!
After an absolutely magical two weeks away getting married, I am officially back in the office! I’m returning with an extra dose of joy, a serious wedding glow, and an even bigger passion for what I do.
Going through a major life milestone like this just reminds me how beautiful it is to build a life you love, and how important it is to protect it.
As you might remember from my pre-wedding posts, I am starting the multi-step process to transition to Cherie Campbell. Because we always do things strictly by the book here, the Law Society paperwork takes about 6 to 8 weeks to finalize. So, while I might feel like a Campbell, I’ll still be officially signing your files as Cherie Baruss for just a little while longer! 😉
Our firm name will remain BarussLegal. Same great people, same smiling faces, and same boutique soul.

😂 Yes, it’s a real holiday! Happy National Hug a Lawyer Day to all my coworkers and colleagues! 🤗
To our clients, if we’ve helped you with wills & estates, real estate, business corporation and protection, or given you peace of mind this year, drop a ❤️ in the comments to send our team some love today!

When I return to the office on June 15 after my wedding, I will be starting the multi-step process to officially change my last name to Cherie Campbell. However, the firm's trusted name of Baruss Legal is here to stay!
Going through a name change is quite the process—and as a lawyer, believe me, I know the paperwork involved! 😉
Before I can officially change my signature or my title, the Law Society has to approve the transition—a process that takes about 6 to 8 weeks after the wedding. So, while we are socializing the name change now, I will still be legally practicing under Cherie Baruss until every official stamp is in place!
While the signature at the bottom of your legal documents might look a little different down the road, everything else will stay exactly the same.

You bought the house. You've had a baby. Congratulations, and welcome to "adulting". 😉
One of the most important items you need to check off your list now is creating a Will. When you’re in your 20s or 30s, an estate plan may feel like something meant for your grandparents. You may feel like you have all the time in the world. The reality... life can throw unexpected curveballs.
If you hit any of these milestones, the "I'll do it later" excuse officially expires:
You Bought Property: If your name is on a land title in Alberta, you need a document dictating exactly who inherits your equity.
You Started a Business: Who inherits or manages your business and its assets if something happens to you?
You Started a Family: This is the big one. If you have a child, a Will is where you legally designate who raises them if you can't. Without it, a judge who has never met your family makes that choice.
Don't let procrastination leave your family unprotected!

Can someone actually steal your house without you knowing? In today's digital age, property title fraud is a real threat that leaves homeowners incredibly vulnerable. 🏡
Fraudsters use identity theft to forge documents, transfer a property title into their name, and take out a massive mortgage against the home before vanishing.
This is where the vital role of Title Insurance during the closing process comes in. It’s not just a closing fee; it’s a permanent shield that protects your ownership rights for as long as you own the home. If a fraudster ever targets your title, your policy steps in to cover the hundreds of thousands of dollars in dispute, including the heavy legal fees required to clear your name and restore your ownership.
We don't just clear your paperwork on closing day; we ensure your biggest investment is completely locked down and protected. 🔒

Under the Alberta Wills and Succession Act, if you have children from a previous relationship, your spouse only gets a specific preferential share (the first $150,000), and the rest is split between your spouse and your children.
If your children are minors, their share doesn't just go into your spouse's bank account to raise them. Legally, it gets locked up by the government (the Public Trustee) until they turn 18. Your surviving spouse may literally have to apply to the court just to access money to pay for your kids' daily needs.
This isn't meant to scare you—it's meant to empower you. The province has a default cookie-cutter formula for who gets your money, your home, and your assets. If you want your rules to apply instead of the government's, you need it in writing.

Please help us welcome our summer interns, Niklas and Justin!
This summer, we've expanded our team to include two exceptional undergraduate students who are bringing a fresh, youthful perspective and energy to the office.
Niklas is a Kinesiology student (and my son!😉), while Justin is a Computer Science student aspiring to be a lawyer.
They will both be learning all the ins and out of the administrative side of running a law firm, as well as exposure to the legal side of how real estate, corporate, and estate planning files work.
At Baruss Legal, we believe the best way to shape Calgary's tomorrow is by supporting the students of today. We love giving young people a chance to experience law at it’s best!

I’ll be stepping away from the office and heading to Nova Scotia to walk down the aisle! 💍👰♀️
During my absence, my incredible team will be there to assist you! Their capable hands will keep all our clients fully looked after, files moving forward, and making sure that everything is running like clockwork.
While I am beyond excited to start this new chapter in my life, I want to assure my clients that I will be returning as the same experienced lawyer with the same passion and commitment to my business and team.
But.... there will be a name change. As of June 6, 2026 I will begin the transition to becoming Cherie Campbell!😉
