Let's batch cook! It's been a while! Life is busy as a full-time mom, and lately I've been thinking about how to consolidate the day to day tasks (like cooking) in order to have a little extra me time at the end of the day to maintain my sanity. I don't think I've found the magic solution yet but I have realized that I can be much more efficient in the kitchen if I just do a bit more batch cooking when time permits....

Here is our Day 4 Smoothie! Berry Chocolate Shake

How do you feel?! Hopefully a little brighter with all the colours going into your body!

This berry chocolate shake is for the chocolate lovers out there, but without the energy slump and sugar blues that come along with a regular chocolate shake.

Raw cacao is truly, in our opinion, a superfood. Cacao (not cocoa) has more antioxidants than nearly any other food. What?! Antioxidants help control free radicals (unstable molecules in the body) caused by toxins in our food, water, and environment. When we have too many free radicals in the body, mutations in our DNA can occur, leading to illness. Eating antioxidants is one of the best ways to counteract free radicals! Cacao is also loaded with magnesium, iron, zinc and fiber. Yep, pretty super.

We’ve also added almond butter for some healthy fat and calcium, spinach and berries for extra vitamin C, and banana to sweeten things up and add a dose of potassium.

That pinch of sea salt helps bring out the chocolatey flavour, but it’s totally optional. Sea salt is definitely an important mineral, so don’t be afraid of it! Let’s be clear, though: iodized table salt is not the same as sea salt! Sea salt actually contains important trace minerals, helps balance fluids in the body to prevent dehydration, and contains electrolytes like sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium which are needed for everything from muscle function to nerve function. After strictly switching to sea salt, you’ll also notice there is a drastic difference in taste (hint: sea salt is the winner)!

The Mighty Maca protein powder is designed to give you an energy boost without caffeine. Using herbs like reishi mushroom, maca and cacao, it also provides an important immune boost. If you don’t have this on hand, add an extra tablespoon of cacao powder and/or your favourite protein powder!

We hope you like this one as much as we do!

It's Day 3 of our first Smoothie Challenge and we're feelin it!

Our Creamy Breakfast Smoothie is delicious and full of fat - the good kind.

Healthy fats help us to balance blood sugar, keeping us fuller for longer. They are also required to help our body absorb nutrients. Not only that, a solid dose of healthy fat can help protect our organs, support brain function and contribute to healthy skin.

For added protein and fibre, we're using our Mighty Maca powder, made with organic h**p protein powder, raw cacao powder, reishi mushrooms and maca root.

You can toss in whatever protein powder you typically use, or a couple tablespoons of h**p seeds. H**p seeds are a great source of fibre, vitamin E and minerals, such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc.

We also love adding cinnamon to our smoothies, not only for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects but because of its prebiotic properties which help promote a healthy gut.

Lets blend it!

First things first: This little beet-filled beauty is a stainer, so let’s put a lid on this one and avoid wearing your favourite white shirt while sipping, shall we?!

So why are we adding beets to a smoothie, you might ask?! Other than making it look really pretty, we loveeeee the health benefits of beets! Beets contain phytonutrients called betalains, which help stimulate liver cells to eliminate toxins. They’re also a good source of fiber, which helps make sure those toxins make their way out of your body, if ya know what I mean.
They’re also an amazing source of antioxidants.

Frozen banana and berries provide the sweetness and creaminess to this smoothie, as well as more antioxidants and fiber. Did you know bananas are also a good source of the feel-good amino-acid Tryptophan?! Tryptophan helps maintain a good mood. Yes, please!

Fresh ginger is a powerful antioxidant and great anti-inflammatory food. Since inflammation is linked to almost all major disease (like cancer, diabetes and heart disease), maintaining an anti-inflammatory diet can be really helpful!

Berry Radical Protein Powder: This starts out with cold-pressed organic h**p seeds, and then gets a super dose of vitamin C and antioxidants from some really amazing berries: Maqui berries, Elderberries, and Camu Camu. Antioxidants fight free radicals and protect you against oxidative damage to the cells. If you don’t have any, feel free to use your favourite protein powder or a tablespoon or two of h**p seeds for some added protein!

We can’t wait to see the beautiful colours in your smoothies!

Day 1: Green Queen of the Tropics

We wanted to start with this one because it’s been SO cold lately and we’re dreaming of the tropics. But, who isn’t these days? Not only will this remind you of better days spent on a beach, but it’s also a great way to add healthy fats, greens, vitamin C and beta-carotene to your day.

Here are just a few reasons this smoothie is good for you:

Coconut Milk: Is full of medium chain triglycerides. This type of fat quickly fuels your brain (which is mostly fat) and body, and is less likely to be stored as fat ON the body.

Mango: Not only will this make your smoothie sweet and creamy like a milkshake, it’s also a great source of vitamin C and beta-carotene, the precursor to Vitamin A. Both of these are super-duper important for the immune system.

RAW honey: Let’s talk about why we want RAW honey vs. pasteurized honey. Raw honey has not been heated or treated, meaning it still contains the live enzymes that make it magical. Raw honey is full of antioxidants and has antibacterial and anti-viral properties. Just make sure you don’t give it to babies under 1 year old!

Queen of Green Powder: This product is made of organic cold-pressed h**p seeds and amazing herbs like spirulina, nettle leaf, chlorella and reishi. Together these pack a huge nutrition punch and provide essential nutrients like iron, vitamins, antioxidants and immune support! But if you don’t have this, feel free to sub two tablespoons of h**p seeds, a teaspoon of spirulina, or your favourite protein powder. Vanilla or berry protein powder would probably work, but not chocolate for this one!

Enjoy!
