Floaters usually appear to be small, grey/black strings, or spots that drift in the field of vision. Since the floaters are floating inside of our eyes, they move with our eyes making them hard to look at directly. They are formed by particles of protein and collagen which make up the transparent gel-like fluid, called the vitreous, that fills the eye.
Although floaters can be annoying, they rarely cause any serious problems. However, a sudden increase in the numbers or size of floaters, sometimes accompanied by flashes of light or loss of vision, may indicate a more serious problem and should be examined with a dilated eye exam as soon as possible.
