The Premier's Stampede Pancake Breakfast at the McDougall Centre this morning became the focus of a unity protest, bringing together the AFL Fight Back group, Water Not Coal supporters, Defenders of the Eastern Slopes, and the sign-makers who have been putting messages on cardboard and into the public eye.

A collection of signs, people, and moments from the morning. And hey—don't be shy about signalling your values while lining up for a pancake.

Except maybe the guy on his way to the bottle depot who wandered in for a free breakfast. And a few others who laughed at the joke about enjoying the good pancakes and the not-so-good party policies.

Because, really, this may be as close to socialism as this government ever gets: the one day a year free pancake giveaway.

Hope it was worth it to those who partook!

This morning at the Premier's Stampede pancake breakfast at the McDougall Centre. Imagine that.

Among the protesters gathered outside, two women on the far right of this photo—who had never met before—discovered they shared a rather unusual skill: puppeteering. Not exactly something you expect to encounter every day on a protest line.

The woman in the red cowboy hat (who lives up near the Valory mines—I regret I didn't catch her name) brought along a wonderfully witty Canada goose puppet. When she learned that Amanda, wearing her "Water Not Coal" toque, was also a puppeteer, she offered her an extra puppet: a little froggie.

Froggie quickly became part of the message, perched on Amanda's clever sign: "Pancakes with a Side of Poisoned Headwaters." The little amphibian drew attention to the sign, added some humour to the protest, and even managed to grab the occasional imaginary fly while waiting for the pancakes to come to an end.

The video below captures Froggie's final mission: investigating a leftover pancake plate.I hope everyone who came enjoyed their free pancakes.
