This week, we join communities across Calgary in recognizing Aboriginal Awareness Week Calgary (June 15–21).

This year's theme, "Water is Life – Stewards of the Water," highlights the vital role water plays in sustaining life and the importance of Indigenous knowledge, stewardship, and responsibility to the land and waters that support us.

For generations, Indigenous Peoples have understood the deep interconnectedness between people, water, and the natural world.

These teachings remind us that caring for the Earth is not only a responsibility to the present, but a commitment to future generations.

As we celebrate Aboriginal Awareness Week, we encourage everyone to take time to learn, reflect, and honour the histories, cultures, contributions, and resilience of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

Today, we acknowledge the National Day of Reconciliation.

This day was created following a recommendation from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which called for a national day to honour residential school Survivors, their families, and communities, and to ensure the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools are never forgotten.

While this day is an important step, nearly a decade after the TRC released its 94 Calls to Action, only about 16% have been completed, a reminder that reconciliation requires ongoing, meaningful action.

At Children’s Cottage, we recognize that reconciliation is ongoing work, and we remain committed to turning awareness into ReconciliACTION.

Special thanks for a room full of love for our Nan’s Place families!

When picking up their children from our care, parents can also pick out a warm sweater, a sweet, knitted animal friend, and a cuddly afghan blanket to take home with them.

Thanks so much to the knitters of St James Anglican Church and their "Knit, Crochet and Quilt with a Purpose" team.

We are grateful for your kindness and generosity, and for the love you put into every stitch! 🧶💛

💛 Our Crisis Nursery is now known as Nan's Place—the same trusted support, with a name that reflects the warmth, care, and comfort families experience when they walk through our doors.

When families face a crisis, knowing your child is safe can make all the difference.

Nan's Place provides up to 3 days of 24/7 care for children from newborn to age 9 in a safe, nurturing, and trauma-informed environment.

Whether a parent is experiencing a medical emergency, mental health challenge, housing crisis, or another difficult situation, Nan's Place offers children a caring place to stay while families receive the support they need.

Support doesn't stop when a child leaves our care. Families can also receive guidance, referrals, and follow-up support to help address the challenges that brought them to us.

Nan's Place also offers Daytime Respite, providing short-term care for children when parents and caregivers need time to attend appointments, access services, or simply take a much-needed break.

Because every child deserves safety, and every family deserves support.

Today, we acknowledge Blue Jean Jacket Day — a day to honour missing and murdered Indigenous men and boys, and to raise awareness of the violence and loss that continues to impact Indigenous families and communities across Canada. 💙

By wearing a blue jean jacket, people across the country show solidarity, remembrance, and a shared commitment to visibility, justice, and healing.

At Children’s Cottage, we believe every child, youth, and family deserves safety, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive. Today is a reminder of the importance of walking together in compassion, reflection, and reconciliation.

We honour the lives, stories, and loved ones behind this day, and hold space for continued learning and remembrance.
