Join NahlaniDance on March 28 and 29 for a weekend intensive workshop. Running both days from 8:00am to 4:00pm, we will jump into a fun and ear-worm worthy choreography all about a family's love for the beach, Ke'ei.

Ke'ei is on Hawai'i island in the Kona district and it was here where the Battle of Moku'ohai took place, King Kamehameha the Great's first battle in his effort to gain control of the Big Island of Hawaii. If you watched the AppleTv show Chief of War, aspects of events leading up to the battle were depicted in the second to last episode and the events took place near Ke'ei. This area holds an important memory for history and an ongoing memory for the family that frequents the area.

Ever been curious about hula dancing but didn’t know where to start? 🌺

🥳 Join our 2-day Hula Dance Workshop March 28-29, open to all levels and ages 16+. This beginner-friendly experience will introduce you to the foundations of hula in a welcoming, supportive environment.

You’ll learn basic hula technique, explore the story behind the song, and discover how arm motions, hand gestures, and facial expressions work together to bring the lyrics to life. Hula is more than movement; it’s storytelling through dance.

🌴 Our session will run 8:00am to 4:00pm, or thereabouts, on both days, and will also feature a mini market during the lunch hour with costumes, accessories, and tropical-inspired handmade goods for sale.

I rarely post pictures and announcements about the many performances I do for independent living, assisted living, or long-term care centres. But today's performance at Kingsland Terrace was one that had to be shared.

Look at the creativity that people hold when it comes to putting on luaus with limited resources and staffing. There were other elements that I forgot to take pictures of such as 5ft-tall palm trees made out of brown and green craft paper, and all the delicious food and beverages.

I performed over the lunch hour for the small group of residents and staff. We had so much fun dancing to songs about:

🌊 picking seaweed
🏄🏽 celebrating the energetic lives of children surfing
🎗️ honouring places that no longer exist or ones that don't look the same as they did when the song was composed
🌺standard luau-type songs
🌴 and many other routines

I shared my story of dancing hula, the Kumu that inspire and encourage me to dance, the story behind the songs, and an introduction to the basic hula movements that I do.

And as always, I encourage the residents and staff to dance with me to the best of their abilities. Many prefer to watch, but there are always a few that get up to dance with me, sometimes to their own rhythm, sometimes following along with me. I look forward to being invited back in the future.
