Chinese Medicine has always treated mouth and gum disease as being directly influenced the health of the stomach and bowels
In modern times we now know the bacteria that causes gingivitis and other gum disease is part of a greater picture of our systemic bacterial ecosystem (the microbiome, much of which is in the large intestine)
Minor imbalances within our gut ecosystem can cause a variety of symptoms such as inflammation
In ancient times Chinese medicine did not have a word for inflammation, however after observing the signs of redness, swelling and pain. They described this as a type of pathological heat, either internally or externally generated
And this metaphorical concept extended into bacterial/ viral infection, autoimmune disease and even sports injury.
The herbal remedies they used to clear this concept of “heat” have been found in modern times to have anti inflammatory or antibacterial properties and in the context of this post can be used to treat gum disease which, in late stages have no curable treatment

Acupuncture literally changes your brain
Which is why it is often used for Mental Health and traumatic brain injuries
There are several explanations that focus on different mechanisms
One mechanism is that the accurate insertion of needles stimulates underlying nerves.
This signal travels up the peripheral nervous system to a corresponding coordinate within the brain increasing activity in the area
For the purpose of mental health, by activating the temporal lobes it can regulate neural activity which can suppress emotional fluctuations. And through activity in the midbrain it stimulates the hypothalamus and pituitary glands which govern the release of every hormone our body needs for homeostasis.
Excerpt from article:
“Animal and human studies suggest that the beneficial effects of acupuncture on health, including mental and emotional functioning, are related to different mechanisms of action, including changes in neurotransmitters involved in emotional regulation such as serotonin, modulation of the autonomic nervous system, and changes in immune function”
Acupuncture for Anxiety Different approaches have beneficial effects.

Strengthen the Immune System
In the Taoist theory of five elements, the Autumn Equinox marks the beginning of the metal phase of the five element cycle. Metal energy relates to dusk, the setting sun, leaves falling, the color white, dryness, cooling, and in the body—the lungs and large intestine.
Autumn is a good time of year to strengthen the lungs, the kidneys, and the immune system in preparation for the cold winds of winter. The body is more susceptible to colds and flus as the weather changes. So, we can use the waning heat and energy of autumn to build our reserves of energy before the stillness of winter sets in.
Reflect on what has happened so far in the year, harvest lessons learned, and prepare for a rest winter before new potential bursts forth in spring.
