In Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin used mirrors to create illusions of space and depth that made the factory and department store settings feel larger and more dynamic The roller skating scene in the department store is one of the film’s most iconic special effects moments, where Chaplin appears to skate dangerously close to the edge of a high floor This illusion was achieved using a large matte painting that showed an open drop, combined with precise camera placement and timing to sell the effect Mirrors played a key role in enhancing the illusion of depth in the department store, helping to hide the edges of the set and blend real space with painted backgrounds The success of the roller skating effect relied not only on visual trickery but also on Chaplin’s physical precision and trust in the camera’s fixed perspective These practical effects, including the use of mirrors and matte paintings, allowed Chaplin to stage thrilling stunts while maintaining the film’s playful, comedic tone
