β€οΈ Father's Day Heart Craft Activity β€οΈ
π Book Connection: π€
We began our Father's Day celebration by reading My Dad's the Coolest, a fun and loving story that highlights all the wonderful things that make dads special, and Love Is, a beautiful book that explores the many ways love can be shared, shown, and felt every day. These stories inspired meaningful conversations about love, family, and appreciation for the important people in our lives.
Creating Special Gifts for Dad: π
After reading the books, the children created heartfelt Father's Day crafts using colorful paper pieces and glue. As they worked, they excitedly named the colors and shapes they were using, strengthening their vocabulary and early learning skills. The children carefully selected, arranged, and glued the paper pieces to create unique heart masterpieces for their dads. Throughout the activity, we talked about the special qualities of our fathers and the many ways we can show love and gratitude to them.
Benefits of This Father's Day Craft Activity: π
This engaging craft activity supported children's development in many ways. Picking up, placing, and gluing small paper pieces helped strengthen fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Identifying and naming colors and shapes encouraged language development and early math concepts. Making creative choices promoted problem-solving and self-expression, while creating a gift for Dad fostered emotional development, gratitude, and a sense of belonging. Most importantly, the activity provided children with an opportunity to express their love and appreciation for someone special in their lives. πππ
This story gave me goosebumps πβ€οΈ What a beautiful example of learning coming full circle from dayhome to home.π
ππ¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ I am so glad to see how effective our "My Colorful Community" multicultural activity has been!
A child was reviewing this week's activity at home with her mom and proudly recognizing her Daada-Daadi, Naana-Naani,(grandparents) and Maasi (aunty) from the community she created at our dayhome. β€οΈ
This beautiful moment shows that children understand community through the people who surround them and care for them every day. Through this activity, she is already recognizing similarities and differences among the people in her world while developing a sense of belonging, identity, and respect for diversity.
Seeing this learning continue beyond our dayhome reminds us that meaningful, hands-on experiences leave lasting impressions. When children can connect learning to their own families and experiences, the learning becomes real, relevant, and memorable. πβ¨
This was exactly the purpose of our learningβto help children celebrate themselves, appreciate others, and understand that every colorful community is special and valuable. ππ
*Note for Parents:*
Moments like this show just how powerful 5-10 minutes of review time at home can be. When you ask your child about their dayhome activities and let them βteach youβ what they made or learned, it reinforces their confidence, memory, and sense of pride. Your interest turns our dayhome activity into their real-world understanding. Thank you for being part of their colorful community too!β€οΈ

π βI Like Myself!β β Creating Ourselves with Loose Parts πππ
After reading I Like Myself! by Karen Beaumont, we invited the children to explore self-awareness and creativity through a loose parts activity. Using a variety of cardboard shapes, empty toilet paper and kitchen towel rolls, and rocks, the children created representations of themselves. Many children used circular cardboard pieces to make happy faces and carefully added rocks for eyes, noses, and mouths. They also constructed different body parts using the loose materials while discussing the important functions of each body part. Together, we talked about how our eyes help us see, our noses help us smell, our mouths help us eat and speak, our legs help us walk and run, and our hands help us work, play, and help others. As the exploration continued, children discovered that when they dropped rocks into the cardboard rolls, the rocks came out the other side because both ends were open. They experimented with different solutions and decided to place one end of the roll on the ground before dropping the rocks in. They also transformed cardboard pieces into slides and ramps, eagerly watching the rocks roll down. This open-ended experience encouraged curiosity, creativity, and meaningful conversations about themselves and how their bodies work.
π± Benefits of This Loose Parts Activity: π€π
This loose parts activity supported children's cognitive, physical, social, and language development in many ways. Manipulating rocks and cardboard pieces strengthened fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness. Creating faces and body parts encouraged self-identity, body awareness, and early STEM concepts such as design, balance, gravity, and cause-and-effect. As children experimented with the cardboard rolls and rock slides, they practiced problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making, and perseverance. The activity also promoted language development as children named body parts, discussed their functions, shared ideas, and explained their discoveries. Most importantly, it fostered creativity, confidence, and a positive sense of self, reinforcing the book's message that every child is unique, capable, and special. πβ¨πππ
π¦π "Can You Rescue the Zoo Animals?" β A Book-Inspired Learning Adventure π¦π¦
After reading YOU CAN! Kids Empowering Kids, we set up this book-inspired activity to bring the story to life. The children worked together to "rescue" zoo animals that were secured to wooden blocks with colorful rubber bands, just like the challenge on our sign: "Can you... RESCUE the ZOO ANIMALS?" As they carefully stretched and removed each rubber band, they freed animals such as π¦ lions, π¦ giraffes, π elephants, π¦ zebras, π
tigers, π¦ rhinos, π΄ horses, and more. Along the way, they learned the names of the animals, practiced making their sounds, and engaged in meaningful conversations about them. The activity provided a fun, hands-on literacy and vocabulary experience while encouraging teamwork and cooperation. π€β¨
It was a little challenging for some children to remove the rubber bands and free the animals, but the children did not give up. πͺπ They learned from one another, shared ideas, and encouraged their friends throughout the challenge. Our little learners worked hard and stayed engaged for almost 1.5 hours, showing remarkable focus, patience, and determination. In the end, they proudly proved that they CAN do itβjust like the inspiring message in the book YOU CAN! Kids Empowering Kids. πβ€οΈ
Benefits of This Problem-Solving Activity:π€π

Today, the children became little scientists as they explored ice painting with colorful paints and ice cubes. They sorted the colored ice by placing the red-painted ice into the red tray and the green-painted ice into the green tray, strengthening their color recognition and sorting skills. This activity provided a wonderful sensory experience as children touched, held, painted, and moved the ice cubes with their hands. They observed that the ice felt cold, smooth, slippery, hard, and wet, and they noticed it slipping from their fingers as it slowly melted into water. The children watched with curiosity as the colors spread across the melting ice, creating beautiful patterns and new shades. They also listened to the gentle clinking sounds of the ice cubes touching one another and enjoyed seeing the sunlight shine through the clear ice. Through hands-on exploration, they used their senses to investigate texture, temperature, movement, color, and sound while making their own discoveries.
Benefits of This Experiment: π§π¨π§π
This experiment offered a rich multi-sensory learning experience, engaging children's senses of touch, sight, and hearing. Feeling the cold, slippery ice, watching colors flow and mix, and hearing the ice clink together helped children build sensory awareness and make meaningful connections through exploration. π₯πΆCrunch, Shake & Discover: Exploring Sounds with Pistachio Shellsπ₯πΆ
Today, the children enjoyed a rich sensory and sound exploration using pistachio shells, bottles, containers, and scoops. As they touched, scooped, poured, filled, and shook the shells, they experienced a variety of textures, sounds, and movements. The crunchy pistachio shells provided a unique sensory experience as children listened to the sounds they created and felt the shells moving through their fingers and hands. They experimented with filling bottles and bowls to different levels and discovered that a half-filled bottle made a louder sound than a full bottle. Children also explored how moving their hands through the sensory bin in different waysβback and forth, round and round, slowly and quicklyβchanged the sounds they heard. Fast movements created louder crunchy sounds, while slow movements produced softer sounds. Through hands-on investigation, the children became little scientists, using their senses to explore, compare, and discover.πππ
