Come visit the Calgary Horticultural Society's new neighbourhood of Silver Springs.

Have you ever wondered which plants, trees and shrubs grow naturally on the prairies? Native vegetation supports important ecosystem roles from providing wildlife habitat and food to stabilizing soils. They also have supported human life on the prairies to both indigenous groups as well as settlers. Come walk the slope along the Bowmont Park ridge and learn about some of the more common native plants found in the Calgary area, a few tips on how to identify them and some of their uses historically and currently, whether for food, medicine or in the garden.

Join former Ward 9 City Councillor Gian-Carlo Carrà, as he interprets Inglewood through the books of Jane Jacobs and discusses broader insights about neighbourhoods and cities.

This walk will discuss Jane’s first and last books as illustrated by a couple of blocks within Inglewood. Our community faced the same threats, within the same era, that Jane Jacob’s Greenwich Village faced in NYC. The Death and Life of Great American Cities, while not ours, is a testament to the power and the beauty of communities at their best in the face of the worst – it is almost ours. But despite the success of both The Death and Life as well as Inglewood’s own remarkable struggle for community, Jane’s last book represents a warning. Dark Age Ahead offers little optimism and suggests that when we fail to remember where we’ve come from, our future darkens. Walk with GC and let’s rediscover our City’s misremembered past in the patterns and echoes of its oldest neighborhood.

Join us for a guided walk through the neighbourhood as we explore the green space at Evergreen Drive SW,

and begin shaping a shared vision for a future community garden and outdoor gathering place. This multi-phase initiative aims to create a welcoming “outdoor living room” - a space where neighbours can grow food, host events, learn new skills, and connect with one another.

We’ll start with a stroll through the area, taking in examples of water-wise yards inspired by Xeriscaping and discussing current trends in Sustainable Landscaping. Along the way, we’ll reflect on what works, what inspires us, and how these ideas could shape our shared space.

Whether you’re an experienced gardener or simply curious about building a stronger, greener community, your ideas and perspectives are welcome.
