Instead of asking:
“Why are they still struggling?”
It may be more useful to ask:
“What ongoing pressures are still present?”
“What patterns are continuing after separation?”
“How is the system responding to those patterns?”
The questions we ask shape the conclusions we reach.

A major decision came out today in Canada.
The Supreme Court has recognized intimate partner violence as its own legal harm, meaning survivors may now be able to take civil action against the person who caused them abuse.
This matters because abuse is not only physical.
It can look like:
• Feeling afraid much of the time
• Not having control over your own decisions
• Not being able to make choices you feel are best for you or your children
• Changing your behaviour to avoid anger, punishment, or retaliation
• Feeling like you are constantly walking on eggshells
• Being isolated, monitored, or controlled in ways others cannot see
The Court recognized that these patterns, often called coercive control, are real and harmful and take away a person’s freedom and autonomy.
At Sagesse, this reflects what we hear every day from the people we support.
If this feels familiar, you are not alone.
If you are supporting someone, your care and presence matter.
This decision is an important step forward, but support, connection, and prevention are still essential.
If you need support, we are here.

In a significant ruling today, the Supreme Court of Canada formally recognized a new tort relating to intimate partner violence. This decision creates a more direct legal pathway for survivors seeking compensation for harms caused by intimate partner violence.
In Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia, the Court affirmed the recognition of the tort of intimate partner violence:
“I would recognize a tort of ‘intimate partner violence’. In order to establish liability under this new tort, a plaintiff must prove three elements: first, that the abusive conduct arose in an intimate partnership or its aftermath; second, that the defendant intentionally engaged in that conduct; and third, that the conduct, on an objective measure, constitutes coercive control. Proof of these three elements suffices to establish that the plaintiff has suffered a dignitary harm…”
Across Canada, intimate partner violence remains one of the leading causes of homelessness and housing instability.
The effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) continue to deeply impact communities across Alberta and throughout the country. As a society, we must recognize that this crisis is happening all around us, often silently and behind closed doors. Reports involving IPV continue to increase each year, with thousands of individuals and families accessing shelters and support services annually in Alberta. Every person has the right to live free from fear, coercion, intimidation, and abuse. IPV is not simply a private matter — it is a public safety and community well-being issue. Meaningful action, education, and support systems are essential in addressing this ongoing crisis.
At Resolve Legal Group, we recognize that individuals experiencing intimate partner violence often require more than legal representation alone. In addition to addressing our clients’ legal needs, we strive to provide wraparound support services and guidance to help individuals rebuild and restructure their lives in the healthiest and most sustainable way possible given their unique circumstances.
If you believe you or someone you know may be experiencing intimate partner violence, reaching out for support can be an important first step toward safety and stability. ~4.7 million women in Canada have experienced sexual assault since the age of 15: https://ow.ly/Wpm550YTy6L
This not just a number. It represents people in our communities, our workplaces, our schools, and our lives. It also reflects experiences that are too often minimized or misunderstood.
Sexual violence is preventable. Prevention means challenging harmful attitudes, understanding and practicing consent, supporting survivors, and holding those who cause harm accountable. It means creating environments where respect, safety, and dignity are the norm.
This month, and every month, we all have a role to play. Sexual violence prevention starts with all of us.
