Mat is acting out the role of someone who is overcompensating for a wound of distrust. He has past experiences that left him with a subconscious belief that he isn't good enough. This has left him with a primary emotion of desire and he prioritizes desirability and perceived gains in his life. He seeks external validation to prove that he is desirable, capable, and good enough. This can create addictive tendencies, actions that seek attention, and pleasure seeking. A step in healing this wound is to see that on his desires and pleasure seeking are filling a void within us and that without these experiences we feel unworthy and incapable of love. He must see that pleasure and positive validation can be enjoyable and rewarding; however, relying on them with integrating self esteem can lead to addiction. He must cultivate feelings of adequacy and internal validation.
