Shirley Chisholm is the next member in our Snapshot series. Shirley Chisholm was the first African-American congresswoman in the United States in 1968, and then went on to become the first major-party black candidate to make a bid for U.S. presidency.

Shirley represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives for seven terms. She went on the run for presidency in the 1972 Democratic nomination, becoming the first African-American candidate to do so. She fought for education opportunities and social justice throughout her political career, but left Congress in 1983.

Chisholm graduated from Brooklyn College in 1946, where she began her career in teaching and went on to earn a master’s degree in elementary education from Columbia University. She served as a director of the Hamilton-Madison Child Care Center from 1953-1959, and as educational consultant for New York City’s Bureau of Child Welfare from 1959-1964.

Shirley became the first African-American congresswoman in 1968, being assigned to the House Forestry Committee, but demanded a reassignment. She was placed on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the graduated to the Education and Labour Committee. She became one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1969.

In 1972, Chisholm became the first major-party African-American candidate to make a bid for US presidency, running for the Democratic nomination. She was also a vocal opponent of the US military draft and was a champion on minority education and employment opportunities during the time she was in Congress. After leaving the Congress in 1983, she went on to teach at Mount Holyoke College.

Shirley passed away on January 1st 2005, but was awarded the distinguished Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 for her work.

The next member of our Snapshot Series is Cleisthenes. Cleisthenes was an Athenian statesman who is credited with the creation of a system of democracy. This system eventually enabled all citizens to be able to actively and directly participate in government.

Cleisthenes served as chief archon of Athens and allied himself with the Assembly, and against the nobles. In doing so, he was able to impose a democratic reform. He based individual political responsibility of a place rather than of being a part of a specific clan.

As chief archon of Athens, Cleisthenes was able to see how tyranny impacted society. He saw that it improved the economic condition of the “common people” and had temporarily broken the political power of the noble houses. He believed that the reforms would not be realized, however, until the principle of hereditary privilege was dealt with at the roots. To solve this, he proposed that political organizations move away from clans and kinship groups, but instead more towards locality. He believed that public rights and duties should depend on the township, and that they kept a register of citizens and elected officials. Citizens would therefore be known by their township instead of by his father’s last name.

Cleisthenes contributed greatly to the idea of isonomia. Isonomia is a principle of equality rights for all. The reforms led by Cleisthenes largely related to the principle of isonomia, which led to a wider and more active participation of all citizens in public life.

The third member of our Snapshot series is Tawakkol Karman. Tawakkol was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 and is the first Yemeni, first Arab, and second Muslim woman to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Karman was also the youngest Nobel Peace Laureate at the time, at 32 years old. She is known as “The Mother of the Revolution” and has been recognized for her work in nonviolent struggle for the safety of women and their rights to be able to fully participate in peacebuilding work in Yemen.

Tawakkol has an undergraduate degree in Commerce from the University of Science and Technology in Sana’a, and has also completed a graduate degree in Political Science from the University of Sana’a. She is a journalist by profession, but is also considered a human’s rights activist because of her work in responding to political instability and human rights abuses in Yemen. She founded the organization Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC), which advocates for rights and freedoms, as well as providing media skills to journalists so that they are able to produce regular reports on human rights abuses in Yemen. Her organization has documented over 50 cases of attacks and unfair sentences against journalists.

Karman has also organized weekly protests in Sana’a starting in 2007, which targets systematic government repression and calls for inquiries into corruption as well as other forms of injustice (both social and legal). The protests continued until 2011, when she decided to redirect protesters into supporting the Arab Spring. She was able to bring Yemen’s revolution to New York where she spoke directly with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon. Karman also organized rallies at the UN headquarters.

Because of her opposition movement, Tawakkol has been imprisoned numerous times for her pro-democracy and pro-human rights movements, which has earned her the names “the mother of the revolution” as well as “the iron woman”. Since Karman has received her award in 2011, she still continues to support female journalists and rally against the government corruption and injustice. She spends much of her time in Change Square focussing on peaceful protests for justice and freedom.
