Honour. Celebrate. Reflect.🌿

Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize and celebrate the cultures, histories, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada.

This day is more than a moment of recognition.

It is an opportunity to reflect on the deep history of Indigenous Peoples, honour the strength and resilience of Indigenous communities, and continue learning with respect and humility.

At Wilson M. Beck Insurance Alberta, we believe meaningful recognition begins with awareness, listening, and a commitment to understanding the people, stories, and cultures that have shaped this land for generations.

Today and every day, we honour the past, celebrate the culture, and embrace a future built on respect, inclusion, and continued learning.🧡

Honour the past. Celebrate the culture. Embrace the future.

On the Course with Alberta’s Roofing Community⛳

Terence D. Cairns, BBA, Executive Vice President at Wilson M. Beck Insurance Alberta, was proud to represent our team at the Alberta Allied Roofing Association Annual Golf Tournament at The Hamptons Golf Club in Calgary. ☀️

AARA continues to be an important voice for Alberta’s roofing industry, bringing together contractors, suppliers, and industry partners who help strengthen the trade and support the people behind it.

They are an opportunity to listen, connect, and continue building relationships with the businesses and leaders shaping Alberta’s construction and roofing sectors.

Thank you to the Alberta Allied Roofing Association for hosting a great tournament, and special appreciation to Chelsea Broadbridge, Executive Director at AARA, for her leadership and work in bringing the industry together. ✨

AI is driving demand. It's also helping drive cargo theft.

According to Canadian Underwriter's Christopher Reynolds, losses from supply chain crime in Canada and the U.S. rose 60% last year to nearly US$725 million, as organized groups increasingly targeted high-value shipments linked to AI infrastructure.

Copper, server racks, RAM, and other technology components have become attractive targets as demand for AI data centres continues to grow.

But the cargo itself is only part of the story.

The report notes that criminals are increasingly using AI-powered tactics to automate phishing campaigns, access company systems, generate fake shipping documents, create false images, and impersonate legitimate carriers.

In some cases, truck drivers unknowingly become part of the scheme, transporting stolen cargo with paperwork that appears completely legitimate.

Key insights from the report:

• Supply chain crime losses rose 60% in Canada and the U.S. last year
• Theft of metals increased 77%, driven largely by copper demand
• AI infrastructure components are increasingly being targeted
• Criminals are using AI to make fraud more convincing and harder to detect
• Higher theft, insurance, and security costs ultimately find their way back to consumers

As Christopher Reynolds reports, experts say stronger vetting, integrated security systems, and better real-time visibility will be critical in helping businesses stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated theft operations.

Connecting with the People Who Keep Alberta Moving 🛣️

Wilson M. Beck Insurance Alberta was pleased to attend the Alberta Roadbuilders and Heavy Construction Association (ARHCA) Golf Tournament in Grande Prairie — proudly known as the “Gateway to the North.”

It was a beautiful day of sunshine, conversation, and connection with the people and organizations helping build and maintain Alberta’s essential infrastructure.

ARHCA represents Alberta’s roadbuilding and heavy construction industry, including the contractors, suppliers, consulting engineers, and municipalities involved in roads, bridges, water systems, and other major infrastructure projects.

A special thank you to Ron Glen, Corinne Urquhart and Kim T. for helping bring together such a strong industry event. 👏

We also appreciated connecting with the County of Grande Prairie and the broader roadbuilding community.

Representing WMB Alberta were Sukhvinder Singh Aulakh, Commercial Account Executive, and Heather Ferguson, Business Development Manager. 🛡️

With ARHCA’s motto, “Fix Our Roads,” the message is clear: strong roads support strong communities, stronger business, and a stronger Alberta.

🍅 FUN FACT: Tomato Sauce Insurance

A secret tomato sauce recipe may sound like something from an Italian family kitchen, not an insurance discussion.

But for many restaurants, food brands, and hospitality businesses, a recipe can be much more than ingredients on paper.

It can be intellectual property.
It can be brand value.
It can be the reason customers keep coming back.

That is why secret formulas and recipes are often protected as trade secrets.
And in some cases, businesses may look at specialized insurance solutions for risks such as theft, misuse, or unauthorized disclosure.

So while “tomato sauce insurance” sounds fun, the lesson underneath is serious:

Not every valuable business asset sits in a warehouse, office, or vehicle.

Sometimes, it is a recipe. A process. A formula.

A secret that gives the business its edge.

At Wilson M. Beck Insurance Alberta, we help businesses think beyond the obvious and understand the risks that truly matter.
