Trucks are on the road 24/7. It is therefore imperative that truck drivers are knowledgeable, skilled, and committed to maintaining the safety of everyone on the road and are aware of the state regulations in their relevant travel jurisdiction. That's why the Department of Transportation (DOT) has established Hours-of-Service regulations for commercial drivers who transport both property and passengers. By limiting how much time drivers can spend behind the wheel, we can reduce fatigue, which can lead to accidents, injuries, and even death. Hours of service rules have been created after a long history of deadly accidents that could/should have been prevented.
Missing as little as 1.5 hours sleep can cause:
• Lack of alertness
• Memory problems
• Moodiness
• Blurred vision
• Memory lapse
• Poor reaction times
Workhub has now created its own fully comprehensive US Hours of Service course. If you know what a logbook is or have used an electronic driver monitoring system is – then you might find all this interesting or at least mandatory. In this 20-minute course we outline regulations enforced by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that apply to drivers involved in American interstate commerce. The lesson provides commercial motor vehicle drivers a basic awareness of:
• Applicable DOT regulations
• 14-hour duty and 11-hour driving limits
• 60-hour 7-day limits
• 70-hour 8-day limits
• And sleeper berth provisions

Protect yourself by staying informed. Ignorance is NOT bliss. Our free course covers the following topics:
● The Different Cyber Threats
○ Phishing
○ Malware
○ Ransomware
● How to Secure Your Personal Devices
○ Install security software
○ Always update
○ Watch downloads
○ Customize your browser security settings

○ Encrypt emails
○ Avoid public Wi-Fi
○ Use Multi-Factor Authentication
● How to Secure Your Personal Accounts
Simple steps to protect yourself from Fraudsters:
-If a caller is asking for your personal information, hang up and call the official phone number of the legitimate source.
-For email and message spoofing (them pretending to be someone else) - hover your mouse over the sender’s email address and look closely for differences in the address.
-Be suspicious of anyone you meet online who claims their love or friendship to you, tells you a traumatic story, or makes you feel uncomfortable.
-If you get a threatening call or message, hang up or delete it. If you feel you need to verify the legitimacy, contact the organization handling the supposed threat.
-Maybe discuss a codeword that is private to only you and those close to you – ask them for it if you feel pressured. You would be shocked on how real AI can impersonate anyone. This lesson cost the head of a Telecom company $25 million after two live faked video meetings.

● What Cybersecurity is
● The History and Cybersecurity Standards
● And how to create a Cyber Security Plan
One of the best defenses against cyber threats is education: knowing what threats are out there and how to protect yourself from them. Every business should create a plan that can help their employees and themselves. An effective cyber security plan should include the following elements:
-Establishing a clear internet usage plan about what employees can do online.
-Adding restrictions on the types of websites that employees can visit.
-Create guidelines and permissions on what kinds of software they can download.
-Requirements to use passphrases or complex passwords for all devices and accounts.
-Establish rules for email safety. This would include directing employees to avoid opening email attachments unless they’re from trusted contacts and organizations, understanding what suspicious emails look like and be wary of opening and responding to any suspicious emails, specify when it’s appropriate for employees to share their work email address, and finally, employers should create a social media plan. Given the explosive growth in social media and the large volume of shared, and captured, information on these platforms … Social media is no longer optional and businesses. All of Workhub’s courses are free. Choose from any of our 80+ courses spanning 6,794 minutes of training, or you can even load and manage your own courses – all for free.
Today we highlight one of our free courses – The New Updated TDG – Transportation of Dangerous Goods!
Our online TDG course provides essential information regarding the legal transportation of dangerous goods on Canadian roads. Upon completing this course, participants will be familiar with topics including: the regulations governing the transportation of dangerous goods; the nine classifications of dangerous goods; TDG placards, labels, and symbols; emergency response requirements in case of a product spill or release; and documentation requirements.
Our topics will cover:
● The history of TDG
● Changes to the TDG regulations
● And the elements of TDG
One of the big changes Is that the concept and term “adequately trained” has been removed entirely. Instead, the new training standard focuses on competency-based training. As you know, each mode of transport requires a special and unique set of competencies and skills. So, it is up to the employers to assess and ensure that workers can execute their tasks competently. While Transport Canada hasn’t issued any specific training requirements, they do specify that general awareness training and job-specific training are both required. This is one of the reasons why we highlight a second big change … “Certificates of Training” will be replaced with “Certificates of competency”. Certificates of competency will need to indicate that workers have received both the general knowledge and function-specific training required by the standard. To learn more and work your way through what you need to know and understand about these changes and other TDG changes feel free to review our free TDG course.

On January 4, 2023, Health Canada published amendments to the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR) with a 3-year transition period, ending on December 14, 2025. During the 3-year transition period, regulated parties can choose to comply with either the former Hazardous Products Regulations or the amended Hazardous Products Regulations, but not a combination of both.
Key changes resulting from the amendments include:
• Improved clarity and precision for certain provisions
• New information elements required on safety data sheets and labels
• Adoption of a new physical hazard class: Chemicals Under Pressure
• A change in name of the physical hazard class “Flammable Aerosols” to “Aerosols”
• A new hazard category for non-flammable aerosols (Aerosols – Category 3)
• Subcategorization of Flammable Gases – Category 1 into 1A and 1B (with the inclusion of pyrophoric gases and chemically unstable gases in subcategory 1A).
Workhub’s newest WHMIS course reflects the amended legislation and helps to satisfy the education requirements for hazardous products.

New Hires Need Safety - Part 6/6 – Iterate on Safety
Over this six-part series we have highlighted that new hires are the most at risk so the key takeaways have been:
1. OVER-COMMUNICATE
2. Implement an EFFECTIVE Safety Training Program
3. Technology is A tool
4. Implementing Technology right isn’t easy
5. Focus on YOUR Safety Culture and
6. Iterate, monitor and IMPROVE
What you don’t measure you don’t manage is a saying that should help you stay focused on methods for tracking Safety Performance:
Conduct Regular Safety Audits and Inspections: CHECK - Evaluate safety practices through regular walkthroughs, scheduled inspections, and third-party audits
Gather Feedback from Employees: LEARN - Use surveys, suggestion boxes, and direct feedback to understand employees' safety concerns and suggestions
Adapting and Improving Safety Protocols: ITERATE - Make changes based on new information, hazards, technology, and regulations to enhance overall safety
Continuous Data Collection and Reporting: DATA - Collect and report data on the company's safety performance to identify new risks and areas for improvement
Iterate: Understand your data, your company and your risks. Practice, plan, review and update. Keep it simple, repeat it often.
Compiling your data shows everyone your picture! Data management is made easy with even the simplest software.
Conclusion: Safety is no accident. Maybe the biggest overall takeaway is a simple statement “a safety program is cheap insurance”. The HOW TO is also straight forward and something you should be proud of: communicate, train, use appropriate technology, build YOUR safety culture, monitor-Iterate-improve. As a leader just ask yourself a few questions: “Do you know a lot about safety in your company”, “are you proud of it”, and “could you look someone in the eye and tell them you did what you could do”? It takes leadership to keep new hires, even the ones that have worked for you for a LONG time, safe!

New Hires Need Safety - Part 5/6 - Creating a Culture of Safety
With the highest rates of injury incurred by the newest staff – we need to make a change at the starting blocks. Strategies for Fostering a First-Safety-First Mindset:
It all starts with building a great Safety Culture that provides focus from day one. This “safety is a priority” approach sets the tone for the entire workforce.
Foremost, you must have leadership commitment. Leaders must set clear expectations and leading by example. The way leaders can do this is by participating in safety training, regularly communicate the importance of safety, share safety goals, progress, and any incidents transparently and allocate resources for safety initiatives (such as training programs and safety equipment). Offer a wide range of safety training programs and delivery options. Consider including recognition programs and reward employees who follow safety protocols to encourage a culture where everyone values and practices safety.
Employees also play a vital role through safety practices. Involvement in safety committees, providing suggestions and sharing safety ideas and concerns, holding regular safety meetings, review incidents, brainstorm improvements and using continuous safety training.
Another key towards a safety culture is clear and consistent communication through regular safety meetings, newsletters, or even digital platforms. And Finally, the whole process needs ongoing monitoring and evaluation through areas like audits, incident tracking and employee feedback.
The culture of the organization will drive the attitude towards safety. Leaders must lead by example. The ultimate responsibility of a leader is to safeguard well-being while advancing outcomes. If new workers see shortcuts are taken and awarded or bad decisions are tolerated … they will adopt that behavior. To avoid serious workplace accidents that will have serious long-term impacts develop a culture of safety and implement an effective safety and training program. When it comes to safety – great leaders know that ultimately tomorrow is the reward for working safely today.

New Hires Need Safety - Part 4/6 – Implementing Technology
In our rapidly changing world, there is an ongoing need to adapt and adopt. New gizmos like Wearables and Sensors plus active monitoring systems can be a very inexpensive way to magnify your safety program.
Finding technology for your workspace is only half the battle. How that technology is implemented can be the difference between game-changing results and serious harm. Technology requires sound methodology and expertise to be truly effective:
Proper Usage: Even the Best Tech Needs Best Practices
Tailor to Individual Needs: Even if the technology is proven.
Integrate with Existing Programs.
Educate End Users – clear instructions and ongoing support.
Evaluate Employee Understanding. Use quizzes, demonstrations, or discussions. The goal is to ensure that all employees have grasped the concepts and are ready to apply them in the workplace. Also use feedback and additional resources to reinforce learning.
Monitor and Reassess: Continual evaluation is crucial.
By combining reliable technology with best-practice implementation, teams can maximize benefits, mitigate risks, and genuinely support development and performance.
Document and Maintain Records
Maintaining accurate records of safety training is not only a legal requirement but also serves as proof that your company is committed to employee safety. Keep a records of who has training, completion dates, and topics covered. This is also needed in the event of an audit or if an incident occurs. Tracking training also helps identify gaps in knowledge.
Creating a safety training plan for new employees is ongoing and requires regular updates to remain effective. As your business evolves, so too will the risks and safety protocols. With a solid safety training plan in place, you can confidently welcome new employees to your team, knowing that they are prepared to contribute to a safe and productive work environment
Conclusion:
Getting it right is important, evolving and improving is critical. Every decision - especially when it comes to new technology - must be rooted in science, tested, monitored and reassessed. The ultimate responsibility of a leader is to safeguard well-being while advancing outcomes.

New Hires Need Safety - Part 3/6 – The Right Expert Tested Technology
With new hires you should ensure that you have created a complete list of duties, done a full risk evaluation of related interactions and created a risk offset training program for them before they have even started. There is no school like the old school – which means looking at what you have in place already and then carefully evaluating your reliance on the new and latest technologies that you may be using or that they may be bringing.
Outdated risk assessments need to continually evolve. But, when new technologies are deployed they may misinform, be inaccurate, or even encourage unsafe actions.
The Rise of “Miracle” Tech - from wearable gadgets to data analytics platforms claiming instant game-changing insights. These types of tools may be developed or heavily marketed by firms focused on profit rather than having any scientific backing or real-world third-party validation. These types of products can add significant risk to onboarding as they may misinform management and employees, provide inaccurate or irrelevant data, and encourage unsafe training or rehabilitation practices.
To properly vet technology effectively request peer-reviewed evidence as testimonials or marketing brochures alone are not sufficient proof. Seek reviews from people in your field, colleagues or experts. Conduct pilot studies that test the technology with a small group under tight supervision. Ensure you monitor performance metrics, injury/incident rates, and feedback before broad adoption. Pay attention to what your staff are saying and doing.
Conclusion:
Remain Skeptical of “Too Good to Be True” Claims. In the end technology is just one tool. Roll out the safety training program for new employees during their orientation. Make it mandatory for all new hires to attend and complete the training before they begin their work duties. Provide them with a detailed schedule and make sure they understand the importance of the training and your work processes.
Be careful of over-reliance on new Technology. At the same time, keep an open mind to win-win changes that actually benefit you, your company and your employees. Go to https://bit.ly/3GhnBKr and see how easy it is to provide employees direct paths to safety plus be one of our excellent customers

New Hires Need Safety - Part 2/6 - Implementing Effective New Hire Safety Training Programs
Safety training programs save lives every day. "Safety is not just a slogan, it's a way of life." Is all you need to know about the value of all of that training investment by all companies combined … saving even just one life is worth it. No one wants to be at the scene of an accident.
Stunningly, 75% of workers have issues with wearing PPE with 56% of workers saying that they just don’t want to, 48% that think it’s not needed, and 36% believe wearing PPE makes their jobs more difficult. This is the data that you need to combat and educate and train for.
Building YOUR Mandatory New Hire Safety Training Program:
Identify YOUR Workplace Hazards: Perform a complete evaluation of possible dangers new employees may encounter in their roles, including physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic risks and understand the level of risk associated with each one. Then tailor YOUR training program accordingly.
Develop Clear Policies and Procedures: Create, review, assign and test your detailed safety rules and steps that address identified dangers.
Design Engaging Training Materials for all Learning Styles: Make sure the content is clear and easy to understand and is interactive by using various media plus hands-on exercises.
Conduct Regular Training Sessions: Plan and conduct regular training meetings and audits for new hires to cover all important safety steps, emergency plans, and the use of your PPE.
Evaluate and Update YOUR Program: Check the effectiveness of training through testing, feedback and incident reports. Remember to regularly update the content.
Conclusion:
Identifying and evaluating risks, as unlikely as they may be, is the first step to new employee safety. Allocate resources for safety initiatives such as training programs, safety equipment and safety tracking software. Audit rigorously and adjust accordingly. Then you can build and communicate a safety program around those risks and use that program to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous training. Your commitment to a culture of safety, plus an effective training program and feedback, will help ensure that the slogan “SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU” means something to both the company and to the employee.

New Hires Need Safety - Part 1/6 - Understanding the Importance of New Hire Safety
Both Companies and their Employees rely on work safety: Over-COMMUNICATE is the KEY! Beyond legal requirements - it is vital to provide employees with proper training to prevent accidents, and build awareness, culture, reputation and trust.
Stunningly, 34% of all workplace injuries happen to new hires within their first year. This is due to a new work environment, lack of experience, and not being connected to the company's safety culture.
It all starts by building a great Safety Culture (so much info on how-to google search) from day one. This “safety is a priority” approach sets the tone for the entire workforce. “Safety first, because accidents last”. Leaders, managers and other employees must set clear expectations and lead by example. Show the new employee the seriousness of safety through training, regularly communicated safety goals, and share progress and any incidents transparently.
New employees are eager to show their effectiveness and possibly even look for short cuts. It is far better to discuss procedures - to determine if there are new paths for efficiency, and also, if there are relative dangers versus the current methods and procedures. Emphasize real life incident possibilities related to your workplace (like past incidents) and discuss items why we use lock-out tag-out, or the damage that can occur from a dropped hammer, or how dangerous a forklift can be.
Finally, particularly with new employees, use ongoing monitoring and evaluation. Use discussion, documentation, ongoing training and re-training, reinforcement and audit as well as employee feedback. Emphasis risk/reward and why doing the right job right is so important.
Conclusion: Over COMMUNICATE - To avoid serious workplace accidents that will have serious long-term impacts develop a culture of safety and implement an effective safety and training program. The culture of the organization will drive the attitude towards safety. If new workers see that shortcuts are taken and awarded, or bad decisions are tolerated … they will adopt that dangerous behavior. Training a new employee may even provide insight into some of the existing issues with current employees. Ultimately - Safety is a cheap and effective insurance policy.
